Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I just heard from Michael Savage's Radio Program (My mom has that channel on 24/7) that Trump "is Willing to compromise on Immigration", where he'd allow Non-Criminal Illegal Immigrants the right to stay in the Country without fear or persecution for simply being here.
If that's true (and I don't know if it's true), that'd a) be a good thing, and b) weaken Trump's appeal with White Supremicists and Alt-Righters.
Well, yeah, because Jeb had married his wife by then. They've probably been a bit friendlier to the whole immigrant thing specifically because, hey, it does in fact affect someone they supposedly care about.
We can complain about the idea that we should have compassion for others regardless of whether or not we know them, but it sure is a hell of a lot easier to have compassion and sympathy when you can see the affects up close and personal.
In defence of armchair diagnoses...
A lot of people are walking around undiagnosed. Mainly because they don't realise they have a condition, because others are unwilling to discuss that they might have one or because the kind of condition they have means they are unlikely to put two and two together.
Does this excuse their behaviour? No: because you can have a condition which is well-managed and which doesn't go into disordered territory. Not all those with antisocial personality disorder turn into axe-murderers, after all: some become really good CEOs. Others don't. Just as autism comes in flavours, so do many conditions.
But, not talking about something that is blatantly obvious because you "don't want to step where professional diagnosis is needed" means it's unlikely to happen. And, those exhibiting extreme narcissism are the most unlikely to ever let themselves get professionally diagnosed, because they are the most likely to be unable to see the problem.
As a society, we need to acknowledge this: undiagnosed conditions walk among us and impact everybody, including those with them. And, it's not usually happy for anybody. Because if anybody thinks Trump is a happy camper, they are not paying attention. At no point has he ever been taught skills to help him cope successfully with what he has, because nobody intervened properly. It's not his fault he doesn't have the skills: but, his behaviour is still his responsibility, regardless. The consequences of nobody acting on his behalf early on in his life has given us... this.

Eudo, we're not denying any of what you said. We're just saying that it's getting both overboard and really fucking gross in this thread, and is also verging into "evil and mental illness are the same thing" territory. None of us here are qualified psychologists or therapists, and we really shouldn't be speculating so much on anyone's mental health when we can't be sure that we're not just projecting what we want to see onto the situation. Plus, us speculating is kind of useless because we're not in a situation where we can help Trump if he does in fact have that kind of problem. It's not really being done out of concern, it is in part motivated by spite in this case.
We need to expect better of ourselves.

So tackle that point: mental health is physical health (neurogentic studies are making that as plain as day — when you can start pointing at specific proteins found throughout the body, it ain't just in your head). No more and no less evil. Somebody can lash out at others when in extreme pain — doesn't matter if it's because they've been stabbed or because they're going through a divorce. Tackling that pain is the important thing, and pain doesn't equal evil.
Disordered doesn't equal evil. Doing bad things, however... that's a different kettle of week-old fish. And, even people without any condition whatsoever can do really, really bad things. See the Milgram experiment. See the Stanford prison experiment.
Call bad things out — but, they don't make anybody EVIL...

I'm curious about the political implications if he pushes through that EO on immigration.
Seems like his base would revolt.
And I mean there are 2 million DREA Mers in America.
500 k in California
300 k in Texas
100 k in Florida
90 K in New York
85 K in Illinois
So this should make Florida and Texas go bluer a little faster. That's good.
Senate Republicans will not support cutting funding to State Department
.
The rumored 2018 Budget Trump wants to create is DOA at this point. The lack of cuts to Entitlement Programs makes it dead to the House, the cuts to the State Department makes it dead to the Senate.
Because that "happy Hannukah" back then doesn't seem to be amounting to squat. As expected of this presidency, I suppose.
A minor note on armchair diagnosis: it's also a violation of medical ethics guidelines for a professional practitioner to publicly opine on someone's mental health. If the person isn't their patient it's hearsay and if they are it's a violation of doctor-patient privilege (unless the person has consented to the discussion).
Canadian schools are now reconsidering trips to the US, out of a fear that some of them will be mistreated.

Two new executive orders
. Because, why not. It's been too long since the last one. One of them involves undoing the Waters of the United States rule, because who the fuck needs clean water?
