Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Boehner: Republicans won't repeal and replace Obamacare
He says talk in November about lightning-fast passage of a new health care framework was wildly optimistic.
You know, I have to honestly wonder why the Republicans have such a hard-on for repealing the Affordable Care Act. They're insistence on it as it looks more and more to be more trouble than it's worth has to be something more than "OBAMA BAD!" doesn't it?

Trump just wants the biggest nuclear dick on the planet. There is no rational reason.
There's not really any logic to having more then a few hundred nukes when it comes down to it, especially if they are mounted to ICMB's or submarine-launched. If we already have enough nukes to turn every population center in, for example, China to radioactive ash, how many nukes we have after doing so isn't going to enter into their decision making.
I was waiting for Trump to prove that he didn't really care about Marijuana or the people that suffer due to medical Marijuana being illegal in their states, as well as those who have been incarcerated over a plant.
How exactly would they "take action" against states that have already legalized it?
You'd think that the guy who is supposed to know so much about economics would appreciate how much legal tax revenue has been generated in states with legal Marijuana. But no, gotta keep that bigoted and failed War on Drugs going!

Do not obey in advance.Marijuana is evil is kind of a conservative dogma. Something to do with blah blah moral decay. Anyway, challenging a recriminalization of marijuana is a potential catch-22.
The states can only legalize marijuana because the federal officials would not enforce the ban (under President Obama). All the new AG would have to do is issue a new memo, saying "go after 'em."
There are several ways to challenge such a decision in court but that's a dangerous route. One of the leading commerce clause cases also hinged on a state allowing marijuana while it was banned under federal law, and if it were reversed or "distinguished", the commerce clause gets a hole blown in it, along with the entire regulatory state.
That would make Justice Thomas happy but no one sane.
A group of religious leaders is apparently setting up an underground network to hide undocumented immigrants from ICE.

Not sure if going public is the best move here. And this could end really poorly.
Also, Trump is calling his deportation program a "military operation".

While this isn't true, its pretty scary when you consider what his mindset is.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I like the sound of "religious leaders". House them in churches. Churches are meant to be a holy sanctuary. By Christian doctrine, you aren't allowed to forcibly remove a person from them. So long as they're within Christ's hallowed walls, they're safe.
This will not stop Trump but imagine the damage it will do to his approval ratings among the neoconservative fanbase with when photos and videos of militarized police tearing people out of churches hits the internet.
