Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

When you're talking about running a government, and you have two factions or even just one that won't budge if they don't get things exactly the way they want, it gets pretty hard to actually you know, run the government.
That isn't to say that ridiculously horrible and genuinely unacceptable things shouldn't be staunchly opposed, but people have to be careful about where they draw that line.
That alt-right article. It really reminds me of the ending of Spec Ops The Line: You want to be something you're not, a hero.
Just listen Konrad's speech to Walker, Walker's actions and justifications are is scarily similar to the Alt-Right men on that article.
A lot of modern military shooters are basically right-wing power fantasies.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That article didn't exactly say that Jon Ossoff is in the lead. It was pointing out the results of a flawed poll trying to turn out GOP voters with creative statistics.
In essence, the fourth estate is doing its job again, at least in some sense. A day late and a dollar short but meh.
Thing is it's not being watered down with moderate or centerist policies, it's being watered down with reactionary policies, a lot of people have a problem with that.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think a lot of the backlash re: accepting Compromise has everything to do with the mental image of democrats seeming to think compromise means "Roll over and give the republicans everything they want in exchange for a token, Pyrrhic victory, then go back to our constituents and shrug apologetically"
Also that

If you don't draw a line in the sand somewhere, then the centrists will happily sell you down the river on account of being too risk averse. You can't be centrist anymore because nothing is sacred — education, employment, social policy, it's all vulnerable. And don't insult me, I was perfectly happy to support Hillary's center-left platform because even if it was a slow-moving and incrementalist policy, it was still rooted in progressive ideology that had its eye on a goal that I supported.

Fuck Trump... Related, fuck Bill "That's not unreasonable" Maher.
Which kind of hit its nadir with Call of Duty: Ghosts trying to claim that every single nation in Central and South America is champing at the bit to invade America.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Yeah, but in that situation, South America had fallen to a populist demagogue/Great Uniter. There's also the implication that American military overreach had all but united the entire rest of the World against the US government, so there were no allies when the Commies came a knockin.
Kind of ironic how on the nose that second bit is, and how dead backwards the first.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI can't say I don't have some spite directed towards Russia and China trying to usurp US status as the world hegemon because with their imperialistic drives around, it is much harder to reduce the role of the US as the world sole super power when the contenders to the throne happen to be just worse.
Inter arma enim silent legesWhere did you get that? I thought that the US and the Federation were the only countries still really standing due to the Middle East blowing up in a nuclear war that caused the destruction of most of the world's oil, leading to widespread economic collapse that left the US and Federation the only entities still standing.

The fact that it took defending kid fucking
to get rid of Milo says bad things about the "conservative movement".
That's disappointing. I'm still going to imagine a CIA agent sipping from a coffee cup to hide his siht-eating grin every time a leak comes out.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.@Fighter: incidentally, mentioned for the sake of context, Spec Ops: The Line is a serious deconstruction of the military shooter as power fantasy. Brutally so because it does it with a bit of a bait and switch of presenting itself as a pretty average game at the start before everything goes horribly wrong.
If you're already aware of that, don't mind me, but it didn't read like you were.

The Trump regime collapsing under the weight of its own incompetence is probably more healthy for democracy than the CIA taking them down from within.
And a lot of veteran reporters/politics wonks are comparing Trump to the Nixon admin in terms of how poorly things are run internally. Only Trump has less expertise in his inner circle and doesn't even have Nixon's cunning.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
So, a case of Reality Ensues when it comes to a demagogue who believes his dream job can run the same as president?
The best case scenario is Trump being lackluster and simply losing his reelection bid. Impeachment doesn't seem particularly likely, and if in 2018 the democrats manage to rally and take back the house and the senate as improbable as that would be (but if that doesn't come with local and state level victories we're just setting ourselves up for another round of heel dragging and obstruction), it might be better to just let Trump serve out the remainder of his term and get crushed in his reelection bid or involved in a damaging and divisive primary battle than to go for impeachment unless the pretenses are ironclad.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.
Basically believe in nothing? What does that even mean?
Progressive policy HAS to be watered with moderate and centric 'real world practicality. Otherwise it's going to be a clusterfuck of epic proportions.
That's why I hated Bernie's Healthcare and College plans. The former was so hilariously impractical, even in ideal circumstances, that I couldn't take him or his other plans seriously.
