The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They like using the soldiers to make themselves feel powerful and because jingoism.

As far as having any actual respect for them or their lives, haha fuck no.

It's a shitty thing to do but the majority of the military voted for Trump so it's a bit hard for me to feel sorry for them.

[up]More or less. They knew what was coming, Republicans don't like socialism in the military either.

In other news, the leaks plaguing Trump aren't due to some "deep state" conspiracy, the Orange House is literally so poorly run, and Trump is so insecure, that they happen on their own.

Ha, I guess that makes 'em Darth Vader, but I doubt they'll get any last-minute redemption.

How is it that Sith references and major GOP players go so well together?

Probably because the main villains of Star Wars are mostly fascist militarists.

Of course the Republicans don't care about the troops, if they did then VA reform would be one of the main talking points.

Why do the military hate Democrats anyway?

Also, more town halls have passed, and more Republican Senators are getting told off by angry constituents.

So which senators are Bail, Leia, and Mon Mothma? Might be good to know once the FreedomTM Star gets greenlit.

[up][up][up]legacy of Vietnam. Lot of the hippies shat upon returning troops. Troops who now are perched at the top of the military.

Also general bleeding heartness of liberals tends to stand at odds for the type of thinking required to be a soldier.

@theLibrarian: As a whole, a solid portion of the military dislikes Democrats depending on their age: new enlistees grew up hearing about the cluster of Iraq/Afghanistan and listening to how Bush got undercut by the Senate and Mccain 'would have finished it.' The generation before remember Clinton in the White House dealing with the fallout of Bush Senior/Reagan's economic policies while NATO was disarmed and bled dry to 'save' Russia. Anyone leftover from earlier is likely convinced the Republicans are still the party of Eisenhower, which they very clearly have not been since 1963-64.

TL;DR when Fox news is your only source of information, you wind up with a warped view of the world and how it is put together.

Yes, but it was a Republican president that sent us into Vietnam...not to mention ordering the coup in Iran that saw the establishment of the Shah.

[up][up] When did John F. Kennedy become a Republican? Eisenhower didn't really get involved much with South Vietnam, only really giving them some Military Personnel to train them. Kennedy's assassination of S. Vietnam's President/Dictator was what really got the US involved in Vietnam completely.

theLibrarian Since: Jul, 2009
#175318: Feb 21st 2017 at 8:32:40 PM

Kennedy got us fully committed, but Eisenhower got us involved when US troops were first sent over.

FFShinra Since: Jan, 2001
#175319: Feb 21st 2017 at 8:33:57 PM

And Nixon also ended said war, for the US anyway.

I'd also note that hippies were equated to with draft dodgers as well. Which meant those who got chosen had to gripe about getting picked because some other guy decided he'd skip out instead.

EDIT- [up]You keep mentioning the bit about Eisenhower sending troops into Vietnam assuming its going to Vietnam that veterans see as the sin. For some that may be true, but it's also not mutually exclusive.

Ironically, Trump's replacement for Flynn wrote a book that laid the blame for the failure in Vietnam squarely at the feet of the military brass, and dismissed the left's impact on domestic support for the war.

I've looked for his book and put in for a hold on it in my library. Kind of want to see what this guy is like. Seems, so far, like he might actually be able to stand up to the likes of Bannon.

[up][up],[up], Really, I am wondering why he took the job-a sense of duty did not stop Harwick and who knows how many others behind the scenes from giving a hard pass. I guess we will find out when he gets in there; if he is just trying to do the best with what's available, or if he made a serious miscalculation-like thinking he might be able to cut Bannon out of the loop or something equally unlikely.

Those previous guys also appear to have been told they'd be unable to hire their own staff, for some reason. Mc Masters or whatever his name is appears to have been where the administration learned their lesson.

We must remember that these are the guys who asked Obama how much of the staff was staying and how many people they would have to hire, only to be told "everyone is leaving" and "the entire four thousand person staff."
