The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, the old "terra nullius," to which "they weren't using the land, so we didn't take it/ taking it was no problem at all."

It's only just being excised from history books that the land was empty.

[up][up][up]This national popular vote initiative has always been a Democrat brainchild to redress the scales imbalanced in favor of the Republicans and their stranglehold on brainwashed voting blocs in key swing states. Hence why most of the 11 States to have signed are Blue, with the only purple swing state being Wisconsin; and why Democrat strongholds like California and New York have signed.

/is thinking through the implications of having New Mexico and New Mexico alone use that system

It wouldn't have changed a single thing this time, aside from rigging the game against third parties even more. I suppose it makes New Mexico into the ultimate non-battleground state- campaigning there would be pretty pointless for both sides, no matter what the polls say.

@Gliphon: it seems to be NM joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, so it basically would mean that it only kicks into effect when popular vote and EC don't match.

If true, then the Alt-Right loses one of it's most important founders. Which is absolutely fantastic. Now if the new NSC Member can kick out Steve Bannon, the movement could be crippled and all would be better with the world.

Milo Whateverpolus will still be around, he has a decent cult following and I'm am kinda afraid he will become even more nuts outside Breibart.

Anyway, he is the poster child of the Alt-Right along Spencer, so he ain't going nowhere anytime soon. Breibart or not he can still give speeches, harass people online and publish his drivel.

Well, he can harass people online. Publishing drivel and giving speeches require people willing to grant him a platform to stand on as well as the ability to go outside without being punched for being a Nazi.

With this pedo scandal in view now, it's unlikely that any college will give him a platform at this time. So any speeches are going to have to be held elsewhere.

To be perfectly fair, he's not the first one to have made that "I'm glad a grownup raped me and made me discover my gayness" point. One of The Vagina Monologues did that too, though it often gets cut.

At least in theory, what New Mexico is doing is 100% legal, as there is no Constitutional requirement that states use a certain method to allocate their electoral votes, and instead, may distribute their electoral votes however they see fit.

IIRC the notion that the state may decide how its electoral votes are allocated has stood up in court as well; the details I leave for those with more time to go chasing after them.
