Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

All I can remember is that Tillerson—the Secretary of State—has apparently been given a sinecure and the entire diplomatic corps has been cut out of key decisions, to the point that staff has had to ask foreign diplomats for updates from the white house.
In other news, doing exactly what sanctuary cities work to prevent: ICE Detains A Victim Of Domestic Abuse At Texas Courthouse
[El Paso County Attorney Joanne Bernal] said one ICE agent was inside the protective-order courtroom, two more were guarding each exit door and other agents were staking out the 10th floor of the courthouse building. They detained the woman moments after a judge approved her protective order. Bernal said she believes that the woman was set up by her abusive boyfriend who knew the details of her court appearance. According to the El Paso Times, the boyfriend is in custody on other charges.
The ICE detainee is a Mexican national identified in a criminal complaint as Irvin Gonzalez (aka Ervin Gonzalez). Bernal said she can't confirm that Gonzalez is transgender. "She presented herself to us as a woman," said Bernal.
The government released a copy of the complaint, including an affidavit in which ICE agents said they approached and arrested Gonzalez outside the courthouse. But courthouse surveillance video, provided by Bernal, appears to show the ICE agents inside the courthouse. They escort a woman identified by Bernal as Gonzalez down a hallway, into an elevator and out of the courthouse exit.
Last week there were a series of raids executed across the country.
In Phoenix, Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos, a mother of two U.S. citizen children, was deported after a routine check-in with immigration officials.
In a separate action in Seattle, a young man was detained by ICE despite the fact that he is registered with the government under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.
In Denver, Jeanette Vizguerra, a mother of three U.S. citizen children, skipped a check-in with immigration authorities and has taken refuge in a church worried she will be deported.
"More people die every year due to domestic violence than in any terrorist attack," said [Andrea Mercado, chair of the We Belong Together campaign, a coalition of women's organizations and immigrant rights groups].
The government affidavit in Gonzalez' case includes her criminal history: several deportations, and arrests for assault, a probation violation, domestic violence and false imprisonment.
But the prosecutor said Gonzalez has no outstanding warrants. "A victim of serious abuse is entitled to a protective order and justice whether she has a criminal record or not," said Bernal. "As a result of the actions of the immigration officials — violating the sanctity of the courthouse — there are going to be a lot of victims who are going to be afraid to come forward for fear of facing the same consequences as she did."
Yeah I don't see an impeached Trump getting a pardon, which could might Pence in the butt, as Trump may have dirt on him.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran<Sigh> When the Senate was discussing immigration reform, one proposed amendment was to allow a temporary visa for abuse victims and another (by Dianne Feinstein) would have prohibited ICE raids in schools, churches and hospitals.

Court Moves 'Bridgegate' Case Forward, Setting A Date For Christie
The case stems from lane closures on the George Washington Bridge that were made in September of 2013 — closures that were seen as targeting the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., for not supporting Christie's re-election campaign.
"The criminal complaint was brought against Christie by William Brennan, a Bergen County activist who is now running for governor," WNYC reports. The member station adds, "The complaint accuses the governor of failing to stop subordinates from purposely creating traffic jams to punish a Democratic mayor who didn't endorse him."
In November, Christie's deputy chief of staff and the former Port Authority deputy executive director became the latest former Christie allies to either plead guilty or be found guilty of federal charges that include conspiracy and fraud.
Responding to today's ruling, Christie's press secretary, Brian Murray, said Mc Gready "is violating the law, pure and simple" in furthering a "concocted" claim.
Back in October, Bernstein relayed details from the courtroom as Bridget Kelly, who was Christie's deputy chief of staff, testified under questioning by her defense attorney.
Here's a summary of what Kelly said:
- That she told Christie about the closings one month before they occurred, and that they were expected to cause "tremendous" problems;
- That Christie's main response was to ask "What's our relationship with Mayor Sokolich?" — referring to Mayor Mark Sokolich of Fort Lee;
- That Kelly also talked with Christie about Mayor Sokolich's public safety complaints over the closures while traffic was still snarled;
- That during a meeting in Seaside Heights, Christie flew into a rage over being asked by Kelly to introduce people, and asked her, "What do you think I am, a ****ing game show host?" Kelly was in tears as she said Christie then threw a water bottle at her that struck her on the arm.

He actually needs the governors to sign off on that, and while Arizona is probably already signing, Cali is likely to reply with a single: "LOL, no."

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesOne more thing:
Pro-Trump ‘Spirit of America’ rallies coming to Georgia
The first rally will be held on Feb. 25 at the Okefenokee Fairgrounds in southeast Georgia. A second event will be at the Liberty Plaza – across the street from the statehouse – on Feb. 27.
“President Trump is under attack from the left, so we need to show the left we support President Trump,” Dooley said in a note to supporters. “The rally will be positive, patriotic and uplifting. Please don’t bring negative signs as we will be there to support President Trump in a positive manner.”
The deplorables are still under arms and as shameless as ever...Though if those areas are empty on those dates there may yet be hope for the old Peach State...

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
I guess the ones in the blue states and some swing states may declare: "BUT WE REFUSE.", some level-headed red states may try a compromise and the Uber-republican states will go "Roger, roger." with no hesitation.

The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Both international and domestic law demands refusal of illegal orders, being lower in the chain of command does not relieve you of responsibility for obeying.
That said, the practicalities of refusing an order, passed down from the commander clown-in-chief and particularly your superior officer...refusing an order's a longshot, no matter how blatant an illegality.
And then there all sorts of wordings to make orders that aren't technically illegal, but the administration has so far proven incompetent in that regard. ![]()

Oh, and Pence may be setting himself to play the only sane man to survive a Trump impeachment. This is largely speculation (though reasonable speculation) based upon circumstance.
