Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Pence heads to Europe on reassurance tour" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-europe-idUSKBN15W0BB
My apologies if this was posted already. I can't help but feel that the very fact we even need a "Reassurance Tour" is what one could call a "red flag"
I have to wonder if Pence is regretting his decision to stand beside Trump through all this: I realize he currently stands to help a lot of his agenda but if I was him I'd one, be pissed as all hell about Flynn lying, two, wondering if this was not the nail in the coffin of my career simply because of association with a garbage fire.
It seems that, with the heightened tensions with Iran over the Iran deal being threatened, and the fuckup in Yemen, Mattis believed that interdicting this weapons shipment might inadvertently kick off a shooting war with the Iranians that no (sane, which excludes Flynn and Bannon) person wants.
Pence is playing a high stakes game, but I think he stands more to gain than he does to lose. If you ask me, Flynn did him a favour by lying to him, because now he has plausible deniability for all the Russia nonsense- a narrative that's further bolstered by the fact that he split with Trump on Russia during the debates.
And now, he's running damage control for Trump- the fact that that's a job that needs doing is shameful, but it's Trump's shame; Pence can cast himself as the reasonable one, who's trying to keep things under control.
He's also in the fairly unique position of being a very right-wing politician that the left desperately wants to become President.
On the other hand, if he's gonna be touring Europe for the next little while, that means one less voice that can pass for sanity in the White House.

Old News: Ivanka Into Trudeau.
Ever since someone brought it up to me, I can't unsee Justin Trudeau's and Fidel Castro's strong resemblance.
◊
Justin's 6 foot 2, Fidel was 6 foot 3 and Pierre Trudeau was only 5 foot 8.
But the timeline doesn't match for Fidel to be the actual father. It's just a really weird coincidence that Pierre's son looks like his bud, Fidel.
◊
Besides the unacceptable damage to his ego, he's probably also staying in the game to increase his fortune. Hence the signing off on fast-tracking ETP's pipelines (he has investments in ETP). And then there was that earlier post in this thread connecting Trump's flip in favor of the One-China policy happening around the same time he won a trademark case in China.
I find it a bit tasteless that he's stopping in the middle to promote his software, and tech in general.
Oh, wait, there was a point.
Solid speech!
