Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He also picked Alexander Acosta
as his new pick for Labor Secretary. He'd be the first Latino in Trump's cabinet.
Also, he said he was going to talk less to the "Dishonest Media" and will instead talk "Directly to the People". IE, He's going to be holding Campaign Rallies more and Press Conferences less.

Because asking a random black person among the reporters is a quicker way to do that than to contact actually Congressional members..... My God, why did anyone think he was qualified? Pray God that his popularity just keeps dropping over the next two to four years, because both of those elections are going to be a referendum on him.

...Honestly, I have no idea what game Mattis is playing, but he is going to get dowsed and burned by somebody if he keeps trying to play both sides while pretending to be uninvolved.
Also, can we stop with the posts that consist entirely of "BUT HER EMAILS"? Save the shitposting for Reddit and every news article that hits the web.

A quick aside I meant to post earlier:
To help Idaho, Otter wants Trump to crack down on states with liberal marijuana laws
In short, my state's Republican governor wants the federal government to get involved against something that was decided on the state level by our neighbors.
Also, Washington Post transcript of Trump's conference:

But "states' rights", amirite? Hypocrites.
It is inevitable that, in an active 40-year political career, some of the decisions HRC made could or did have undesirable consequences. The same could be said of anyone. Taking specific acts or outcomes, even if the chain of causality is dubious, and blowing them into huge issues is the modus operandi of the disinformation media. They want you to get so exercised about "them emails" or "child soldiers" that you turn off your critical thinking skills.
I don't think anyone was pretending that Clinton was a perfect candidate, but she was by far the best offered during the election, and the positive far outweighed the negative in my estimation. Regardless of whether you agree, justifying Trump's election with "Hillary was a bad candidate" is sort of like justifying blowing your head off with a shotgun because you found a zit on your nose.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's hardly the first rumblings we've heard from other states. Back when Colorado first legalized recreational marijuana, we started hearing from neighboring states about wanting to fine us for their citizens bringing the substance back to their states.
My retort to that has always been that y'all should be paying us for babysitting your stoners. Traffic congestion in this city has been a nightmare ever since every college student in the country has made Colorado their second home.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Well, I just lost a lot of respect for Rand Paul after hearing him say the following
:
Before that, I thought of him as someone I disagreed with on a fundamental level, but who at least came to his conclusions in an honest way with thought given to them. This turnaround after all the Benghazi hearings is extremely revealing.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I love how the reasoning Republicans are giving for why investigating the potential of Russian interference in the highest office of our country isn't a priority is because they gotta repeal Obamacare, something their constituency is all but begging them not to do.
That's not just party over country. That's evil over country. That's like saying, "I'm sorry, I'd love to join the flight to stop the Death Star from blowing us up, but then who would kick this puppy? I think we both understand how important puppy-kicking is. I don't have time for trifles like the Empire's planet-killing murder weapon."
Every day, it becomes more and more unbelievable how cartoonishly evil the GOP is.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The Senate is holding a hearing on 'improving' the Endangered Species Act.
Since the Republicans have made 233 legislative attempts to repeal it in the last six years, it's safe to say this doesn't bode well.
Look, I know trying to block nominations is important, but it'd sure be awesome if there was actually a push for people to call their reps to block damaging repeals of environmental legislation, too.

Republicans don't care about their constituents. If they did they wouldn't push policies that actively harm most of them.
It's all about pushing their myopic, morally indefensible vision of "America"; they'd rather turn the country to ashes before having America be anything different from what they want.

Otter is knocking at the wrong door, seems like. The Rohrabacher-Farr amendments are Congress's deed, not the president's. Although I am not certain how broad they apply.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI read through the transcript of that press conference. Why? Because I'm an idiot.
Trump made the assertion that "fake news" basically equals news that doesn't treat him fairly. In other words, he wants the news to do nothing but kiss his ass, even when he does things that should rightfully be called out. Basically, he has no concept of what a reporter's job is; he prefer if they were just a non-thinking, pro-Trump propaganda machine.
A side point: The phrase he SHOULD be using in this context is "biased news". "Fake news" implies that a news outlet flat-out made up a news story.

Did anyone watch Paul Ryan's press conference which happened before that? He basically stated the intention to repeal the ACA and then quoted Humana and one other insurance company stating their intent to withdraw from the healthcare website, because apparently young people aren't signing up for insurance.

At least he got called on his Electoral College BS. That needs to happen more.
