Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know, as horrible as everything is, this is admittedly comedy gold.
SNL really loves this year.
Continue writing our story of peace.
As has been said before on this thread...you gotta either laugh or cry, right?
This thread has helped me a lot with picking the former. Thanks, everyone.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo since it is very unlikely the Republicans in Congress will do anything against Trump (the Senate Intelligence committee head—Nunes, I think?—has refused to investigate Flynn or the administration's overall connections to Russia, the committees won't demand Trump's tax returns, and the investigations the Democrats started don't seem to be going anywhere), impeachment is also unlikely. It's been theorized (and I find it highly credible) that the reason for this is not just that they want to put their policies into practice and can't if they turn on Trump, but that they're afraid of what said investigation might turn up. Namely, that the RNC was indeed hacked along with the DNC, and there is all sorts of blackmail material on the GOP.
All that said, an alternate strategy for convicting Trump (and possibly, hopefully, pulling the rest of the administration at least down with him) is outlined in this Twitter thread: "Things are happening"
and this article:
"Trump can be held accountable for violating the Constitution, even if Congress doesn’t care"
I especially like New York and California's likely roles in this.

I'm fairly certain that was exactly what happened to Trump University.
Susan Collins is at it again: She will vote against Trump's EPA Pick, Scott Pruitt
. She will protect Pruitt from a Filibuster, however.
Also, Two Senior House Republicans ask the Inspector General to investigate the 'mishandling of classified infromation'
. AKA, they're investigating the leaking, not the leaks themselves.

Whatever the Intelligence community is going to do, they had better do it fast [1]
, because Trump is about to cut them off at the knees. When the CIC assigns one of the billionaire sycophants in his coterie to 'review' ALL of the Intelligence Agencies, I figure they have a few weeks before they find themselves shut out or crippled beyond recovery. If anyone out there still has an ace up their sleeve, you are running out of time, fast.
The hopeful part of me thinks that they wouldn't be this blatant unless they felt they already had everything they need to put him away. No point in tipping them off that there's an ongoing investigation unless it wouldn't matter. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if they're leaking stuff to force Trump to lie. If he spends days yelling about fake leaks only for irrefutable proof to come out that the leaks are accurate it makes him look even worse.
An update on the Dakota pipeline
"Governor orders evacuation of Dakota pipeline protest camp" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-north-dakota-pipeline-idUSKBN15V0E0
It's on NYT. Can't link it but google it .
Trump is planning to lobotomize the Intelligence Agencies using his friend and ally, Stephen Feinberg, head of Cerberus Capital Management.
The possible role for Stephen A. Feinberg, a co-founder of Cerberus Capital Management, has met fierce resistance among intelligence officials already on edge because of the criticism the intelligence community has received from Mr. Trump during the campaign and since he became president. On Wednesday, Mr. Trump blamed leaks from the intelligence community for the departure of Michael T. Flynn, his national security adviser, whose resignation he requested.
There has been no announcement of Mr. Feinberg’s job, which would be based in the White House, but he recently told his company’s shareholders that he is in discussions to join the Trump administration. He is a member of Mr. Trump’s economic advisory council.
Mr. Feinberg, who has close ties to Stephen K. Bannon, who is Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, declined to comment on his possible position. The White House, which is still working out the details of the intelligence review, also would not comment.

There's a level of bureaucratic "no" that almost no change at the top can deal with, systematic change is hard. Plus the intelegence agencies may be banking on the legacy effect, get crippled now while going down fighting and down the road when Trump is goes get the credit for standing up to him.

Seriously.

And now Steve Bannon, former Breitbart exec. chairman and Trump's 'Advisor', is LIVID at the Breitbart Report
. It'd be so funny and hilarious if Steven Bannon pisses off the Alt-Right so much they turn on Trump.
