Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The NSA and CIA have always been the cheerfully amoral Token Evil Teammate to this country, but they have always had their hearts in the right place, even or especially when that means ripping out someone else's. That said, they have been generally competent and dedicated, and they have provided the strongest pushback against the regime besides the federal courts; and if the links over the last few days are anything to go by, they appear to be in the process of cutting Trump and his acolytes out of as much sensitive policy and operations as possible. However, the FBI is still in the pocket of the moldy orange as long as Comey remains, which makes me glad that said sycophant has nowhere near the competence and reach of Hoover.

Which seems to be their sole purpose of existence. That and goading America to war.
Continue writing our story of peace.and The Devil Goes Down to Georgia note
“I am running for Congress to be President Trump’s strongest ally on Capitol Hill in making his America First agenda a reality,” said [Sandy Springs businessman Bruce Le Vell], who has pledged to serve only eight years and to not take donations from special interests.
Although Trump won Georgia by a 5-point margin, the president’s embrace could prove riskier in Price’s establishment-friendly district.
Trump lost the district in Georgia’s March primary and eked out a 1-point victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in November. Price, who was confirmed last week as Trump’s health secretary, won re-election by a more convincing 62 percent of the vote.
He seems more than willing to take that risk. In his campaign announcement, Le Vell said he would fight to break the “establishment’s stranglehold of power and end the progressives’ assault on our Constitution.”
And he knocks unnamed rivals in the race “for pretending to support the president while actively working behind the scenes” to undermine him.
Le Vell, who owns a jewelry shop in Dunwoody, joins a packed field on the second day of a three-day qualifying period for the office ranging from liberal Democrats running against the new president to conservatives who promise to be his biggest ally. The vote will be held on April 18 and a runoff – all but guaranteed – is set for June 20.
Point is, if I've learned anything from Deep Space Nine, its that having a Token Evil Teammate on your payroll is indispensable.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. If I learn anything from Game of Thrones, they are more harmful than all of my enemies combined.

Breaking news:
American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time that they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said. The intelligence agencies then sought to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to influence the election.
The officials interviewed in recent weeks said that, so far, they had seen no evidence of such cooperation.
But the intercepts alarmed American intelligence and law enforcement agencies, in part because of the amount of contact that was occurring while Mr. Trump was speaking glowingly about the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin. At one point last summer, Mr. Trump said at a campaign event that he hoped Russian intelligence services had stolen Hillary Clinton’s emails and would make them public.
It's on the New York Times. I can't link it since I don't have a subscription but someone copy-pasted this part.
LOCK HIM UP!!!

This Survey was posted a while ago...Happy new year? The world's getting slowly more cheerful
In the Americas themselves, decades of US meddling have left an awkward legacy. Its neighbours, Mexico (37%) and Canada (17%), clearly have issues. Even 13% of Americans see their own country as a danger. Pakistan's unenviable position as a (distant) second in the global threat stakes probably has a regional explanation - 15% of the world's population lives in its neighbour and arch-rival, India.
The U.S. was voted the biggest threat by far, garnering 24 percent of the vote. Pakistan was a very distant second with 8 percent, followed by China (6 percent) and Afghanistan (5 percent). .

The growing reality (not simply truth, but outright reality) that Trump is a Russian Stooge (at best) is getting me more and more nervous and saddened every day.
It's getting to the point that I'm starting to be okay with the idea of a Red Scare Mk. III!
I really wish that these agents, who are now leaking everything they have, would've done this sooner.

"I really wish that these agents, who are now leaking everything they have, would've done this sooner. "
To be fair, they probably didn't want to taint their own election, more than can be said for the FBI.
Also, the people who tend to work in those fields probably couldn't have dreamed that Trump would be electable...I thought he had no chance, and I live in GA.

Russia Today. They and their more tabloid-ish sister Sputnik News (same Kremlin-controlled family) claim to offer alternative viewpoints the "MSM" won't touch.
By which they mean the Kremlin's line.

My guess is that the intelligence community was aware of the entire thing, but had their hands tied due to not wanting to do anything capable of being construed as a blatant endorsement of one candidate over another. Now that Trump is President, with all the compromises... well, they did say "all enemies, foreign or domestic"...

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotAs far as I can tell, Rand Paul is compromised.
EDIT: But in positive news, Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R, FL) recognizes Protesters worries about ObamaCare repeal and replace
, and as far as I can tell, is one of the few Republicans that recognizes these protests as being authentic.
He gains points with me.

I just want to point out that we knew about this Russian stuff before the election. The true magnitude of the scandal wasn't fully known but there were suspicious things coming to light about Trump's campaign months before. The Flynn stuff and Steele Dossier just added to the scandal. Now it seems like the dominoes are, hopefully, starting to fall.

More like Black-and-Grey Morality. Just because the NSA has a terrible record on civil liberties doesn't mean they want to sell their country to Moscow.
