Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even some evangelicals feel that way. Check out Fred Clark on Slacktivist
some time.

Trump delenda estPretty sure he's completely serious. The man posted for this shot
. He knows exactly what people think of him and has worked very hard to foster that image. He is proud to be Darth Satan.
"A bill filed by a Tennessee Republican aims to make children born through artificial insemination illegitimate."
Make any children conceived through artificial insemination illegitimate? Why? The vast majority of people who use artificial insemination do it because they can't have children the normal way. And the rest of the children conceived that way are already considered illegitimate under the law.
Do you know what happens with an illegitimate child? They aren't counted in a will if they aren't specifically named. That's it. Absolutely nothing else that means anything. All this would do is encourage people to specifically name children in their will, and any lawyer who isn't a complete moron will encourage people to do that anyway to minimize disputes.
It would also be dead easy to circumvent.
"Oh, the law says our child will be illegitimate?"
"Yes, so here's the adoption papers. Just file them right after the kid is born and they'll be legally legitimate."
You know what, I'm erasing my signature. It's gotten increasingly more disturbing over the past year.

I... what even is the point of that, in this day and age? Like, what the fuck? People who go for that are mostly couples who are trying really hard to have a child. I very much doubt people like that would ever consider their children illegitimate. And this law applies specifically to married people! What in fuck????
What could they possibly gain from this nonsense? No one refers to their children as "illegitimate" in this day and age because no one cares.

The Republican party uses a time machine when it nominates candidates. The nominee s not chosen by the number of votes, but by how many years outdated the candidate is.
They found a caveman in Trump.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Seriously, don't Republicans in Tennessee have better things to do with their time than come up with stupid bullshit like this?
That seems rather insulting to cavemen.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI can't help but be amused by the fact that just about every time I see Trump compared to something it turns into an Insult to Rocks.
One of the comments on the article pointed out the same thing. I haven't laughed so hard all day.
Worth noting that, according to the article:
This could in large part be just to fuck over same sex couples. I would not be surprised.

Again, given the current cultural trends, "illegitimate" has lost most of its meaning, so unless he's trying to fuck over people in child custody cases, most of which are solved out of court anyway, I'm still goddamned confused about what, exactly, he hopes to gain from this. What would this even do, aside of making a case taken to court a bit more difficult? And in the cases of straight couples divorcing, this wouldn't even have an effect on custody.
I mean seriously. This has so many logic holes in this I'm not even sure this would hurt anyone.
It could be just a gesture to pretend she's doing something worthwhile.
Whoever elected her, she can just go to his town halls and say how she stuck it to those godless people living their lives not exactly like yours and get applause. Tis a small group that'll actually even give the bill a second or first look.
Duly edited. Huh, when I first saw Tennessee, I immediately thought of Sheila Butt. Haven't heard of Weaver...

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives

Imagine how mainstream Christians feel when politicians start with their evangelical crap.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.
