Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Accusing someone of racism is only cheating when it's not relevant, and it was beyond directly relevant there.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonSessions is a man who freely admitted he stopped one step short of joining the Klan. He's an overt racist. The "Race Card" isn't being played by the Democrats. It was put in the field by the people who nominated Sessions.

That's what I was getting at, and that's what they are accusing her of. It's obviously total bullshit, and Sessions is clearly racist, but the Republicans are trying to pretend that Warren was trying to smear him instead of, you know, presenting a rather relevant bit of evidence.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonThat's not new behaviour for them, sadly. This is how they always react to having their racism pointed out.
Being called a racist invokes the same reaction in white people as if you called a black person the N-word.
New Survey coming this weekend!I'm completely unfazed by that op-ed. Some Beltway idiot complaining about "decorum" is utterly beneath my notice.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.""lets have some decorum. Also your green card isn't valid if you are brown enough and speak arabic"
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"No racist is ever going to admit to being racist. I did a little bit of reading into the racism allegations regarding Sessions; his responses to the claims made by his black subordinate sound exactly like the kind of downplaying and backpedalling a racist would do when he gets caught, and even taking Sessions at his word that it was a joke, he's still an enormous asshole. Not to mention all the other testimony about him from other people.
At best, he is a casually racist bargain bin conservative republican with a horrible civil rights record.
The GOP have no leg to stand on. Claiming that he has a good civil rights record is a complete fabrication, and their defense of the race allegations are entirely dependent on the essentialist, one-dimensional definition of "racism" that is fundamentally useless. Prosecuting a KKK member does not magically make him not racist.

Anymore than fighting the Nazis erased American or Soviet or British racism. People often struggle it seems not only to accept that racism goes beyond the one dimensional as you say, but that it comes in degrees. One can hold African-Americans in utter contempt, think they're stupid and want to avoid helping them, while still thinking that burning crosses into their laws and lynching them is wrong.
I read about how the Chaffetz town hall went with protestors and some of the questions that some people asked in it. It gives me a little bit of hope.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyDoes the Electoral College actually protect small states and rural areas from being dragged around by metro areas?
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonThe Electoral College was built upon giving the smaller states a stronger pull in presidential races.
This is why we don't need to get rid of the Electoral College. We need to combine it with the popular vote.
Possibly one more thing other than those two to keep Congress from deciding the vote too much.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."IMO congress should be the ones voting for the President, not the general public; there's no clear advantage to Presidential systems over parliamentary systems, and the drawbacks are well established in political science literature.
Eh. No. I'd say the party should've been deciding, yes, but letting the people decide from their nominees would've been ideal.
New Survey coming this weekend!Looking at Brittan right now does not inspire my admiration of parliamentary systems, though they do also have a lot of old monarchist baggage being dragged around.
Hearing of Trump's cabinet reminds me of this song...(Sorry if it's another link.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWYtdeH4Whg
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Make the EC proportional, maybe? And no faithless electors

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonMaking the EC proportional would've made Hillary's loss even worse.
I'd say just get rid of it all together.
It was a product of its time.
New Survey coming this weekend! That does raise the concern of only needing to win the largest metro areas at the expense of the rest of the country, no?
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonI'd rather someone need to win the majority of populated areas to win than a majority of unpopulated areas to win. Tyranny of the majority is a real problem but you don't fight against it by imposing a tyranny of the minority.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranYou don't need the EC to make people from smaller states have a say and be represented by the government.
I don't get how Clinton was supposed to be a warmonger?
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonAll right, listen up.
You want to actually do something about all this? Look in my signature. Right there is a way to fight back. Stop saying democracy is dead, stop saying we're all going to die. Actually do something about it.
This movement is gaining supporters and it has the majority on its side. They aren't sitting around and mourning democracy. There using democracy to fight for what they believe in.
They know which side they're on. I know which side I'm on. Which side are you on?
please call me "XionKuriyama" or some variation, thanks! | What is the good deed that you can do right now?A profile of Jessi Bohon, a Christian teacher from Tennessee who went viral criticizing the GOP on their disregard for the ACA, countering the claims that the Drumpf represents the white labor class and Christianity.
To me the central message of Jesus Christ is pulling up the oppressed, the vulnerable, and the poor. You could apply that to a lot of things today. Black Lives Matter, people with disabilities, the LGBT community, the refugees, or health insurance. The central principle remains the same.”

I think that's about the extent of what the opposition is capable of offering. I mean unless they want to just keep sharing memes about how she got "Mitch Slapped" and the like.
