Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Like Trump cares. He doesn't even understand the concept of basic loyalty. Remember all those times he snubbed his employees because he wasn't "satisfied with their work"? Yeah, he won't even keep his end of a written agreement if he decides on a whim that it doesn't suit him. Why would anyone think he'd uphold an unspoken one?
Trump is the epitome of, "Yeah, but what have you done for me lately?"

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Their conclusions seem to be that the media coverage had a large effect on the results, by:
- Not taking Trump seriously enough.
- Assuming it was Clinton's election to lose when actually many factors were against her.
- Thanks to both candidates being so unpopular (deservedly or not), the race was very volatile, so media coverage swayed people very easily towards one candidate or the other.
- Yes, racism was a very significant factor, but in combination with other factors like education level and economics, not the sole factor.
On those three executive orders on law enforcement: Trump signs three new executive orders on crime reduction
:
1. "One of the orders, aimed at "reduc(ing) crime and restor(ing) public safety," directs Sessions to establish a new Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety.
The Task Force will develop "strategies to reduce crime, including, in particular, illegal immigration, drug trafficking and violent crime," propose new legislation, and submit at least one report to the President within the next year."
2. "A second executive order, aimed at combating transnational drug cartels, prescribes steps for various federal agencies to "increase intelligence" sharing among law enforcement partners. The order also instructs an existing inter-agency working group to submit a report to Trump within four months detailing the progress made in combating criminal organizations, "along with any recommended actions for dismantling them.""
3. "Finally, Trump signed an executive order directing the Justice Department to use existing federal law to prosecute those who commit crimes against law enforcement officers."
So, three orders that create a new task force, a new working group, and directs the JD to prosecute cop killers. Seems like a lot of hot air to me. Just a symbolic action, nothign more.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.
A very well thought out and informative series of articles indeed. That last point in particular is something to keep in mind: the climate that produced the 2016 election, and the climate which is propelling so called "Global Trumpism" into positions of power across the world is not something which can be attributed to a single decisive factor such as xenophobia or lack of economic opportunities. Defusing this particular climate will require simultaneously addressing many different and loosely related problems, and will require a degree of popular mobilization against Trump and his counterparts that hasn't been seen in living memory.

A federal appeals court upholds the stay on Trump's travel ban.
Moments after the ruling, Trump Tweeted: "SEE YOU IN COURT!" adding: "THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!"
In response, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat who leads one of the states that challenged the ban, said: "Mr. President, we just saw you in court, and we beat you."

FBI Investigating Dakota Pipeline Protestors
Russians possibly infiltrating the Executive Branch? PFFFT. Who gives a shit?!
New Survey coming this weekend!
In the style of this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PALxktAMw3I)
let's just say that Trump got COURTOWNED!

The issue is, by "see you in court", Trump is talking about the supreme court, and assuming he waits until Goursch is appointed, he's got a decent shot of winning that one, since despite the dubious wisdom of that particular clause, the constitution is fairly unambiguous in giving the executive branch wide discretionary power to control immigration.
If he doesn't end up winning and there's a major terrorist attack, he'll use it as a justification to ask for emergency powers, if he does win, he'll have a much easier time banning people from particular countries from entering the United States in the future.
@Euod: No, I just don't think there's any reason to believe things will turn out alright in the end. It might be fine, or it might not be fine.

Disgusted, but not surprisedJust for future reference, the problems with the EC are:
-It weights rural voters disproportionally
-It means that only swing states matter in any way
-People who vote for the other party in safe states basically cast worthless votes
Correct?

Suggesting that a country be divided on ethnic and cultural lines raises some really sticky questions about other countries. What about places like Switzerland, Myanmar, Belgium or Canada? Hell, what about 90% of Latin America?
