Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x2 Basically Kelly Ann Conway, my favorite person in the world, got in the middle of the Ivanka Trump/Nordstrom thing by telling people to go out and buy Ivanka's stuff. In doing so, she violated ethics rules from Public Citizen and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
"An employee shall not use his public office for his own private gain, for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity."

Cue Trump dismissing that on the grounds of: "We don't care about what the PC CREW says".
At this point, I wonder why we'd want fewer idiots in the White House. With the Democrats in the minority the biggest obstacle for any conservative strategy is the Trump Administration's own incompetence. The last thing we want is to remove idiots and potentially get a competent schemer.
Case in point, a competent president might have been more careful with the Muslim Ban. Enough that it might have worked despite opposition doing all it could.
Another reason to want more idiots, not less. Though I think you mean schadenfreude, there.

Because Conway's a pretty dangerous idiot, in contast to Spicer, who is so out of his depth as to almost be a Harmless Villain since he's so easy to see through.
So I suppose the question becomes "are the idiots more dangerous than the competents in this situation?"
Frankly, I think Lord Dampnut
is less dangerous in the long term of he's surrounded by idiots. When he's eventually out of the White House, there'll be less public opposition to dismantling his works and might be easier to recover from an international diplomacy standpoint if Trump remains an active laughing stock

At least I can understand how Perry might have made that mistake. And how Trump also probably made it. "Secretary of Energy" is a very vague title.
I wouldn't be surprised if Perry asks Trump to rename the position to "Secretary of MOTHERF*CKING NUKES".
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Look, we all know Conway won't even be given a token slap on the wrist for the breach of federal ethics laws. Because the one who is supposed to handle the review of those is her organization... in other words, the White House. Without exaggeration, Trump is not even pretending that "conflict of interest" is a thing and equally distressingly, we're finding out it basically isn't. if you're in the highest office. Pretty much everything in place relied on decorum and accepting that "maybe I shouldn't look like I'm blatantly out for myself over everyone else."
But why would he? He's gotten this far and his approval ratings are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than they should be (granted this says nothing except "it's not 0%) and honestly, he's right. He may as well just boost his businesses. It doesn't matter. The people who supported him before won't stop because of that... they're either too ill-informed or they're being helped themselves.
It's just a dick move. Which he doesn't mind.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.It should be noted that Conway isn't an idiot. She has no place governing, but she managed to get Trump in the White House and somehow kept him from twitter in those crucial last days. And of all the Trumpists, she's both shameless and unfettered. She can and will say anything, not out of ignorance, but because it works.
Conway is a world apart from Quayle and Palin. And Spicer is no substitute...
So this is an unfortunate thing
. Young conservatives on college campuses are being ostricized and harassed without any good-faith effort to have dialog.
These are possibly the kind of people you want to be extending olive branches to, because shutting them out will only push them toward entrenching deeper.
This is pedantic of me, but
"Schadenfreude" is NOT the same thing as "Scheherazade".
Oh, the children of rich folks who complain about "entitlement" and "safe spaces" and who openly deny that racism, sexism, are issues in today's society are having their ideas rejected? Boo fucking hoo.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you![]()
That's why you've got to be careful about the kind of knee jerk hatred politics can do easily generate, no matter how blatantly horrid the other side is.
At the risk of setting off a huge tangent (it did last time I used this analogy...) It's the difference between punching a Nazi just because he's a Nazi and punching a Nazi after taking the time to listen to him and realizing he's very punchable.
That's the difference between telling stories about horrible things happening to people and enjoying hearing stories about horrible things happening to people.
That second paragraph goes to my first point. They're still young. The majority have probably only been raised conservative. Do you want to prove that upbringing right?

I live in the South. I have PLENTY of experience dealing with folks like this and I can say that each and every last one of them deserves nothing better than quiet disdain and Lies to Children.

Just seen on CNN: White House Advisor: "Go buy Ivanka's Stuff"
Don't know the context offhand though.
