The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

GOP Congressman is OK if Alaska wants to join Russia

With all the spinning Reagan is doing in his grave he could power NYC for weeks!

EDIT: Should be noted that this is an old tweet, but it's still pretty relevant considering all the fuckery.

[up] As I've said before, if Reagan had seen what his Party would become because of him, he would have never gotten into Politics in the first place.

I'm almost certain that, if he were with us today, he'd be condemning Trump, condemning the Alt-Right, condemning the Tea Party and condemning almost all of the Republican Party. I wouldn't be surprised if he rejoined the Democrats at this rate.

How much money does the DNC spend on Manchin? The correct answer is, of course, "too much," but I'll bet we could get four senators elected elsewhere with all the money we spend hawking this fake Democrat to red blooded West Virginia.

So despite having no idea if the central DNC even spends any money on Manchin (he may well do his fundraising himself or get it from the state party) or if that money could be better spent elsewhere at all, you're certain that he could be swapped for four seat gains elsewhere?

You've admitted to having no facts on the subject but don't care about that at all. All you care about is being angry, even if your anger would cost the Democrats any chance at a majority in the senate come 2018.

if Reagan had seen what his Party would become because of him, he would have never gotten into Politics in the first place.

I doubt it, Reagan was a racist who hated gay people and worshiped at the alter of supply side economics. I'm sure he'd be rather proud of almost everything the Republican Party has become, hell he himself was fine with ally with authoritarian regimes as long as they weren't communists (which the Russians now aren't).

To be honest I'm real hesitant to put my name and information on any petition that the White House gets to read.

Petitions are worthless anyway: I know at least five 'throwaway email' sites, that can be used to skew numbers really damn fast.

The whitehouse.gov petitions are supposed to be responded to but that was under Obama.

I did sign a couple of them though. If I can admire the Founders for putting their names on a paper that might have gotten them hanged and believe it was worth it, I can risk a little of my personal info.

You know the Senate rule which was used to censure Warren? It has roots in a decision to censure John Quincy Adams when he tried to read a petition from slaves when he was a Representative of Massachusetts back in the late 1830s.

And then, as now, not allowing someone to speak about the subject brings bigger attention to the subject than it otherwise would have gotten. Let's hope Warren and others can use this incident to drive home their points.

A Democrat in West Virginia is useless. What's the point if he never votes with the rest of the party? In fact, even having a state party in West Virginia is useless; there aren't any Democrats there who aren't just DINOs, and by that I mean real Republicans-masquerading-as-Democrats, not the center-left types that only Bernie Bros mistake for conservatives. Better that we not sully the party with that vermin.

The point isn't to suppress that half of the country who feel the Republicans better represent their interets. That's what they've been doing to us for 30 years. The point is to push the entire nation in a more progressive direction. Don't compare West Virginia to California today. Compare them to what they were like ten years ago. If they only way to get democrates elected in places like WV is to present themselves as gun-totin', law and order, let's open a factory here style conservative democrat, that still leaves open the opportunity to lead them toward a more constructive vision of America. It's an incremental process.

Our shale deposits will only last us 100 years and the coal mines are automating the miners out of existence. My state's fucked if we don't accept that and embrace alternative energy sources NOW rather than later. Oh, yeah, I'm from WV. tongue I voted independent because I bought into the whole "There's no way Trump can win" propaganda and couldn't stomach either candidate. Not that it mattered. There was no way in Hell we were going to vote for Hilary no matter what I did.

But, if there's ever a protest in my area, you can bet I'll go on a day I'm not working.

Also, FYI, the military has nonlethal riot deterrence gear. Even IF they get called out to deal with protests, they have a lot of wiggle room to do what they're told while not actually doing permanent damage to those they shoot. So, you know, take hope. Even if the semi-worst happens and the military gets called on you and actually goes, you will probably choke, cough, and tear up for a while, or feel reaaaaallllly hot for a second so that you can't do anything but hop like a frog on a griddle, but there's no reason to assume you're going to die.

How's that for a mixed bag of optimism?
