Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Don't: I just learned that both Women (Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska) were a part of some Education Council in the Senate that could have actually stopped her, and they could have kept DeVos from continuing forward to a full Senate Vote. In fact, Murkowski's vote was the vote that let DeVos get to the Senate Floor.

Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) were the only two Republican Senators to break ranks.
Yeah, it pretty much took a concerted effort to even get these two to break ranks.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Collins and Murkowski are just like the rest of the Republican pig dogs. If they had voted against DeVos in committee, none of this would have mattered.
They were probably instructed by McConnell to vote against her. Bipartisanship is a lie.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Uphill battles. If it takes a direct effort to get even their own education people to try nixing an enemy of education . . . boy we are between rocks and hard places.
I'd say find out everything you can about your ground level civil servants and city level politicians and find out where they're going to draw the line on these people. I get the feeling they're our only hope. And from a conversation I had with a longtime friend who is a special education aide, it sounds like they expect US to keep fighting the battles for them with the congress people.
When a political player offers a concession, the proper response is "More". If more is not forthcoming, then it's "ok, back to the struggle." It doesnt matter who the players are, be they republicans or democrats.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Dakota Access Pipeline to win US Army permit for completion
Environmental groups, including Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and the Center for Biological Diversity, issued statements criticising the decision.
They accused the Trump administration of putting corporate profits ahead of Native Americans and the environment.
Nearly 700 people have been arrested since protests first began last year, according to law enforcement officials.
Just last week 76 protesters were arrested after refusing to leave land owned by the energy company.
The proposed crossing point for the pipeline is upstream from the tribe's territory, raising fears that any rupture could threaten drinking water supplies.
The pipeline's owner, Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, says the project is safe.
What does either of them have to gain for this?
Sanders fell into a similar trap during the campaign, and Cruz is probably the most hated republican among republicans...
Is it just some fun while Rome burns?
Also, hahahahaha

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives@Crimson Zephyr: I realize emotions run high on this topic, but can we not reduce ourselves to calling people pig dogs?
Ok, a few pages back I was very confused when people were referring to leftists and Democrats as if they were entirely separate groups. Like, I'm pretty sure that Democrats are varying shades of being leftists. What was up with that?
Also, man I knew De Vos was going to get in by the hair of Pence's vote, but damn if it's not disappointing that it happened anyway.
I dunno that anyone's actually given a reason for why. I'm going to guess that they want to get their ideas out there, which, well, fair enough. They found a venue and both agreed to it, in a time when neither of them is running for anything. Someone's going to be watching it, though, and possibly come to support one of them, so there's that to gain.

Left and right are relative. Alice is on Bob's left but Bob is on Charlie's left.

Continue writing our story of peace. And again, given the general association of the left and Democrats in America, that is a poor explanation. I'm already aware that positions are relative, I've been in this thread forever, but when you're talking of them as two separate groups when they're usually talked about as Democrats being basically different scales/degrees of leftist, the conversation gets confusing because you've changed the definition of at least one of these words.
I feel like my question isn't being understood.
For the love of God! She doesn't even have what's essentially a High School Diploma!
EDIT: Reading over it again, This source may be a Joke Site. My bad if it is.

I'm quite sure Beaverton is in the same field as The Onion. Though that statement wouldn't surprise me...
Also, De Vos was involved in Michigan's education system. I don't know the details, but the people affected don't seem to have had any grizzly problems. Also, she donates alot of money to republican campaigns.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesFar Right is "Got Mine Fuck You." Right is "Work For It You Idiot." Center is "Let's Even The Playing Field And Then Work For It." Left is "Why Do I Have To Work So Much For It?" far left is "No Boundaries, No Work, Everybody Gets What They Want Whenever They Want."
ETA: Leftists are trying to cut down the disparities between the top dogs and everyone else, and cut down on the amount of work we need to do to survive. Far leftists are trying to erase class and country and have everyone live in a carefree utopia like Star Trek's Earth supposedly is.
