Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

British Prime Minister Theresa May poked fun at Trump's hand size at a private dinner.
A new story I came across and a couple reminders of what's due today.
"Trump's pick for labor secretary admits to employing illegal immigrant" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-pudzer-idUSKBN15M1CP
"Senate poised to vote on controversial education secretary" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-congress-devos-idUSKBN15M1X3
"Appeals court to hear arguments on Trump's travel ban" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-immigration-idUSKBN15L0GC
So, Trump and co have been pushing the whole "lying, terrorist loving media" thing to advance their security agenda. They accused them of not covering a multitude of incidents.
Well, the BBC is having none of this.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38890090
Not a single white supremacist terror attack on that list. To be expected, of course, but when you consider some of the mass shootings that have happened here, compared to how Spicer and Trump apparently desperately scrounged up every single police incident, regardless of how minor, in order to inflate their list's numbers, it's quite sad.
Worried about Trump, asylum seekers walk cold road to Canada
"While the majority of the world is turning their backs and building walls, the fact that Trudeau took this bold humanitarian goal put [Canada] on the map," said Chris Friesen, director of settlement services at Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia.
"(Trump) said he would turn away the refugees and we would go back to Somalia," said Mohammed, peeking timidly from behind the hood of a thick parka she received in Canada for winter. "We were so scared. We just wanted to be [in] a safe place."
[The] Canadian Council for Refugees... as well as Amnesty International and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, are demanding Canada abandon the Safe Third Country Agreement: Trump's United States is no safe haven, they argue.
Huh. So, this is what its like to be on this end of go-to/no-go country comparison... Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
One silver lining to all this is that the more time he wastes on stupid crap like this, the less time he has to sign off on more horrific E Os and whatever horrible bills the GOP Congress sends to him (such as Medicare cuts).
Edit: page-topper again? <sigh>

Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, they "tampered with" us by informing us. Giving us more information. How dare they? Don't they know info should be withheld from voters to trick us into voting a certain way for the greater good?
No, the Democrats point out the latter and assume it ends the discussion. Anything to blame Clinton's loss on anything besides her own actions and policies and not acknowledge the moral failings
of a Democrat and the Democratic
Party
in general
.
I mean, it wasn't their information to give, and they are most certainly not people with our best interests at heart.
Also, I mean. In your second source, it's noteworthy that the biggest sin of Democrats was not doing enough vetting on Trump's nominee before voting for him.
It was still, y'know, Trump's nominee.

Well, the BBC is having none of this.
I feel like they played into his tiny, tiny hands there. That list is entirely defensive. Trump took five seconds to make a belligerent claim and the author of that article dedicated extensive time to researching a prolonged refutation that basically consists of going, "Nuh-uh! We're a GOOD source, Mr. Trump! Honest!"
If Trump gets the media to devote all their time to pleading innocence whenever he makes random accusations in their general direction, he wins. Writing this article was a waste of time that could have been put towards emphasizing whatever new horrible thing Trump's up to, because anyone who might need to be convinced by it will just roll their eyes, utter, "Fake news," and walk away.
All the BBC accomplished is prove that Trump can stop their presses with a wave of his hand. We need to stop letting him dictate the battlegrounds or we'll never get anywhere.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Any new on the De Vos situation?
....I sort of expect Trump to appoint her by Executive Order if another Senator flips and they don't confirm her?
"You can reply to this Message!"Anyone heard about Justice Democrats
? I hope they're successful!

They're voting for her right now
. It looks like she's going to win by 51-50 (with Pence breaking the tie for DeVos).
We tried, guys, but it looks like Public Education may be dead.
What's interesting is what on Montgomery County Tea Party member who is trying to get the arrested man's ruling commuted wrote in an op-ed in a local newspaper:

I read, and shared here, an article documenting similar meddling in other races, like the competitive house districts, I remember the article focusing on a race in Florida.
