The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but Trump ordered an air raid on Yemen that left 30 civilians dead, all targets still alive. One of the civilians killed was a fucking Navy Seal.

Considering the hate Hillary got from conservatives for Benghazi, I can't wait to see the bullshit excuses they come up with for the man who accidentally causes a massacre and dares to call it a "success."

(Also, I understand the date listed is 30 January, but the story really only picked up over the past day or so, so I thought it fitting to post it here.)

[up][up] It was posted here several times when the raid happened, apparently Obama pocket vetoed the raid before he left office due to insufficient intelligence.

Oh and a Navy Seal by definition isn't a civilian, there was one US special forces casulty, several injuries, a number of equipment losses, at least a dozen "women and children" civilian deaths and a number of other civilian deaths (meaning adult male, not sure when we became an "other").

How Ordinary Americans carried out inhumane acts for Trump

A week ago, men and women went to work at airports around the United States as they always do. They showered, got dressed, ate breakfast, perhaps dropped off their kids at school. Then they reported to their jobs as federal government employees, where, according to news reports, one of them handcuffed a 5-year-old child, separated him from his mother and detained him alone for several hours at Dulles airport.

At least one other federal employee at Dulles reportedly detained a woman who was traveling with her two children, both U.S. citizens, for 20 hours without food. A relative says the mother was handcuffed (even when she went to the bathroom) and threatened with deportation to Somalia.

At Kennedy Airport, still other federal employees detained and handcuffed a 65-year-old woman traveling from Qatar to visit her son, who is a U.S. citizen and serviceman stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. The woman was held for more than 33 hours, according to the New York Times, and denied use of a wheelchair.

The men and women who work for the federal government completed these and other tasks and then returned to their families, where perhaps they had dinner and read stories to their children before bedtime.

The way Trump is SO obsessed with the "voter fraud" makes you wonder if Trump isn't just trying to desperately keep his ego boner hard, but rather is trying to delegitimize his presidency just so he can get out of the job and spend his days saying he was the TRUE president without actually having to BE the president

Of course, it's definitely both

[up][up]Honestly I think Donald Trump legitimately doesn't understand that there's a pretty significant difference between illegal votes and people being on the voter rolls who technically shouldn't be due to poor record keeping and lack of communication between state agencies.

Of course the real problem is that he is going to move forward as if millions of illegal votes were actually cast, regardless of what he personally believes.

I have to ask, is there any evidence that Russia interfered in lower level elections? I know they got involved in the Presidential one, but what about the rest of the GOP majority? I haven't heard any such thing. Which to me says that Hilary got the best damn outcome she was ever likely to get out of this. She technically won the election but doesn't have to sit in charge of a power block that would override her vetoes on principle even when she was making sense or compromising with them. Heck, any Democrat winners who wanted Bernie in office would probably go "fuck you, bitch" before they actually lifted a hand to help her. Maybe that would only have lasted for two years, but realistically, on her own she's just not that great at uniting people.

Partially it IS about her being a woman. There's at least two women in my area who I've talked to and heard say, "women don't belong running for President." Sure I've only heard it twice, but there's bound to be more women saying it out there. A lot more. If she can't even get her own sex backing her up, I doubt she could have rallied enough support after two years of being held back yet again by other people. And then the Alt-Righters and Bernie's people could both scream and shout bloody murder about how incompetent her Presidency was. Which would set the gender wars back years or decades.

As bad as the Trump presidency is . . . this is an early burnout of a problem that was building up for a loooong time. It'll be a while before Trump even CAN end things, but the person that came after Hilary could have been inheriting a US that WANTED to blast apart and end in a blaze of fire.

It should be understood that the Russian interference wasn't with the voting directly- their interference was about hacking emails from DNC and then using Wikileaks as a front to release them. So... more or less we can say that damaged the entire party, I guess?

Certainly the Democrats were considered likely to regain the Senate- with what ended up happening, them only gaining one state, being the worst case scenario.

Then I stand corrected on what Hilary would have been facing without the Russians, to a point. She would probably have had the usual lukewarm run where she benefits people to a point but not enough to shut down the haters.

And we would still have had our problems covered up and festering for a while longer. I wish we'd just ignore geographical boundaries and admit the United States has never been one country. It's been two countries horribly Frankensteined together from the start, we've just gotten bad enough about the Frankensteining that instead of having clear cut boundaries we've got both sides intermingled pretty badly.

[up][up][up]"Interference" in a sense of the email hackings and propaganda efforts. A lot of people conflate it with actual vote tampering, which as far as we know never happened.

edit- Yeah, honestly the most disgusting misogynistic comments I heard about Hillary all came from women in my area. The conservative wings here in the Appalachians carry a very strong "stay in the kitchen" attitude. Not to mention the whole "she's to blame for Bill's philandering" bullshit. Some people jokingly call a few of the groups around here "American Taliban" but when members of certain churches tell the women they can only wear headscarves, skirts covering the ankles, and prevent their daughters from entering highscool "so they aren't corrupted" it rings pretty true.

Basically: they didn't tamper with the votes, they tampered with the voters.

That is a very important comma. Democrats rightly point out the latter, while Republicans retort with the former and assume it ends the discussion.

It's worth noting that Hillary's approval ratings are highest when she's getting stuff done, not when she's trying to win a popularity contest.

So Melania Trump's lawsuit against the Daily Mail basically confirmed that she fully intends on profiting off being the First Lady.

DAE late stage capitalist women are only a problem when they want to make capitalism more equitable for all, hence dashing our dreams of full luxury communism and worship of Hoxha?

Isn't that just typical? They heap praise on a woman when she does a good job, but turn on her the moment she seeks a promotion.

Yeah, that's regrettably commonplace. Men who seek recognition are considered ambitious, confident go-getters. Women who do the same are considered egotistical troublemakers who don't know their place.

If Hillary was a man, I have no doubt she'd have won the election in a landslide.

[up] It's worth noting that the very same studies that demonstrate that trend indicate that other women are actually more prone to that response on average than men, which goes a long way towards explaining why Clinton lost among white women.

[up] Once Brexit is finalized, I imagine that game is gonna be pretty relevant to the UK's borders as well.

[up][up] TBF, Female Misogynist is a thing that exists in real life. Case in point: the late Phyllis Schlafly. She was arguably worse than someone acting with a "crab bucket" mentality since she was a lawyer and activist who wanted other women to Stay in the Kitchen. A crab that got out of the bucket and, rather than do something meaningful with its freedom, spent the rest of its life trying to keep other crabs in the bucket.

And yes, Trump admired her.
