The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Angelus: If we survive the next few years I could see a Jewish president happening. (Or athiest Jew if Bernie comes back and wins.) Anti-semitisim still exists but no mainstream Christian sect currently bolsters it and Jewishness isn't that far outside the "normal" anymore.

If there is a Jewish president, it won't be Sanders. He's too old, elements within the DNC hate his guts, and (unless Trump and co cause the Overton window to shift significantly to the left) he's still too radical.

Sanders also seems to be a bit of a Horrible Judge of Character and/or competence. Case in point: Tulsi Gabbard. He and his supporters need to ditch that opportunistic soulless grifter asap if they haven't already.

They have yet to disavow her. The nutjob "revolutionaries" I see in my feed are currently looking to primary "everyone who didn't support Bernie" but think she's great because she did back him. Just goes to show the kind of immunity you can secure by joining up with the "revolution" early.

I don't want to go back, or cause trouble re:abortion but.

Like, ignoring all the other pro-choice arguments, the fact is that most pro-life pro-birth legislation is seemingly drafted by people completely ignorant about what things like preeclampsia and ectopic pregnancy even are, and as a consequence, nearly all instances of such legislation makes it that much harder for any pregnant person to, you know, live, if something goes wrong.

Which. Calls into question how much they actually value life.

It fits into the same problems with basic ignorance and "alternative facts" as a lot of modern American politics.

[up]It was never about understanding-the evangelicals that draft and sponsor these bills genuinely believe that conception is sacred, and an abortion at any stage is murder. Therefore, they believe that any pregnancy should be carried to term regardless of circumstance or risk, with the mother's life secondary; that a woman should die trying to give birth, even when doing so will absolutely result in her death, the child, or if the child died in the womb. From their point of view, the woman should be glad to die trying to protect that sanctity, no matter that woman's own faith or beliefs; one more example of forcing religion on others under the guise of freedom, and wholly apart from the secular and philosophical questions the topic raises without a thread of faith or doctrine.

Also, this should be the end of the topic: the mods have been tolerant so far, and if people wish to continue to discuss this topic calmly, they should ask the mods for a separate thread.

Californian leaders have retorted to Trump's claims that the state is "out of control". Insert conservative ranting about the use of statistics provided by "[REDACTED]-lovers" here.

Also, I think I may have seen Alec Baldwin get in a Twitter fight with Glenn Greenwald over... something. Not like anything short of an artillery barrage would get the latter off his high horse anyway...

Pretty good video on Trump's interview on his favorite movie, Citizen Kane.

Essentially Trump sees himself in Kane(and they do share a lot of similarities) but he doesn't recognize Kane's flaws because that would mean recognizing his own.

In fact, he seeks to see Kane as the victim and not the wealthy hollow abuser looking for love that he is.

[up]actually, when the video talk about kane being happy with is mother, you could also said the same about trump and is father, which so far is the closer thing donald have to figure he actually respect which bring again the parallel with kane
