Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A bipartisan group of former senior US officials have made a filing stating that Trump's Muslim refugee ban further endangers national security
. The full text of the filing is available at the site.
The ten officials include Secretaries Albright, Kerry, Napolitano, and Panetta; General Michael Hayden and Ambassador Rice among others.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot![]()
They already blame and hate the "coastal liberal elities" for everything anyway. Might as well protect our people and not give a damn what they think of us. And yes I know this sounds like their own rhetoric, but the difference is we're actually in danger, they're not. At least not any they haven't brought on themselves by voting against their own interests.

If all of this culminates in Bannon getting knocked out by a baby, it will be Worth It.
Disgusted, but not surprisedtclittle: now that I've read that article...
Colin Powell was wrong. Trump isn't just a national disgrace. He's a planetary one. If aliens visited our planet, they'd engage in their equivalent of mocking laughter at seeing what the world's most powerful country elected to be their leader.
At this point I wish he would Just. Stop. Tweeting.
What is more likely to happen I wonder...Trump releasing his tax returns, or Trump acknowledging a poll that is not in his favor as accurate?

Yeah, it's always bad when a head of state lives by a Never My Fault I Reject Your Reality code, but it's even worse when said nation state is the most powerful one on Earth.
There's a chance that the light switch thing is less stupid than it sounds. A lot of office buildings have weird touch panel light switches for dynamic lighting. Like, the pattern you move your finger in controls what lights are actually turned on. The thing is that these touch panels tend to be featureless white squares flush against the wall without any labelling. So if those are the ones there, then it means that the aides are looking for a normal switch, and a switch type they've never seen before, with no indication of what it even is, is in plain sight.
It means that either the aides are too scared to try things out in case they accidentally set something off, or they're too proud to admit they don't know how to turn the lights on and don't ask for help. And the janitorial staff probably won't bother volunteering any information.
Either that or the switch is behind a bookshelf or something, and no one bothered to look.

So, Make America Kittens Again now has the option to block images of several other people:
- Mike Pence
- Marine La Pen
- Nigel Farage
- Geert Wilders
Genius, although I don't know if I'm going to add more, I'm having a difficult enough time seeing infographs when Trump is blocked. Wonder if they're going to put Bannon on there?
No one ever thinks to bring a flashlight? The whole thing is a bit odd.

I wouldn't worry about Trump heading "the most powerful nation on Earth" for too long. For one thing, the 800+ foreign bases depend on allies to host them.
And Bannon and Ryan working on the tax code. That could only mean good. No worries here. None at all...
Also, the Falcons lost the Superbowl after shilling a 21 point lead in the first quarter...(bleep)... and I don't even like sports. On the other hand, the commercials seemed to have heavy diversity and "better together" themes; though I stopped watching after the first quarter.

As others noted, that President was Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it's Hilarious in Hindsight because of Schwarzenegger's recent challenge to Trump, paraphrased: "You can do my job since you care so much about ratings, and I will do your job, and then Americans can sleep soundly again."
Despite the fact that he's ineligible due to not being a native-born citizen, I would gladly take President Schwarzenegger over the clusterf*ck we have right now.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Plus, it's hard to make a portmanteau of "President" and "Terminator" that doesn't sound stupid.
