The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Cheeto Benito threatens to cut Berkeley funding over the protests.

Legally he can't do that without congress approval. Trump's media team, Bannon/Milo/Breibart/Faux News are loving the protests, as they can paint the whole thing as liberals being intolerant and hostile to 'freedom of speech.

Also, someone filed a petition to declare the Anti-Fascist movements a terrorist organization in the White House, unsurprisingly it is another move from /pol/ to become relevant again after they no longer are the useful idiots the election needed.

So about those Russian sanctions - turns out the changes yesterday were initiated from the end of the Obama administration to make it easier for tech companies to do business. It's mentioned in this NYT article, a bit further down.

The fix to the sanctions was initiated by career Treasury Department officials during the last days of the Obama administration and finalized on Thursday. And officials who remain at Treasury from the Obama days supported making the change.

The technical explanation is this: Apparently Russian border and customs officials are connected to the F.S.B. [the Russian intelligence agency]], so theoretically, any visit to Russia that involves payment of a border tax is a violation of sanctions - it would be material support to the F.S.B. That goes well beyond former President Barack Obama's intent.

The adjustment keeps the sanctions focused on the intelligence unit of the agency.

State-owned media in Russia is trying to spin this as a win, though.

So Yiannopoulous would have tried to single out individual students lacking immigration documentation for harassment.

The UC Berkeley letter warns the Republican hosts of the event that Yiannopoulos could target individual students — holding up their photos or revealing personal information about them — during the speech that will be live-streamed, “putting students at risk.”

“Other targeted groups on our campus have experienced Horowitz’ tactic of publicizing the names and pictures of individuals on posters throughout campus property, and there is a likelihood that there will be Horowitz-backed posters pasted throughout our campus,” the letter said.

In that hypothetical "what if democrats splitted into two parties" I think it would be ideal if there was still other parties so there aren't just two since having just two choices is too easy for "us vs them" mindset. But then again, we have 8 sort of major parties over so I'm probably just so unused to idea of two parties. Still, I think if there would be more than two major parties that it would avoid one of them being radicalized or polarized to some extend

Black Comedy at its Finest (or Gallows Humor for us Americans): Letter From the Arab World-- America, You Look Like an Arab Country Right Now Welcome to the club.

One example:

The moment at which we felt real solidarity with the American people, though, was when we started hearing BBC reporters talking to your citizens with the patronizing tone they normally reserve for the Middle East. Correspondents were sent to far-flung corners of the United States to talk to farmers and factory workers to try to understand how they feel and to ask condescending questions. I’m from the British Broadcasting Corporation, are you familiar with the BBC? Where do you get your news from? Do you feel angry? Does religion play a role in how you are voting?. (The only thing missing were pictures of people with blue ink on their thumbs; please consider introducing that practice in the future.)

If the Democrats completely destroyed the Republicans at every level of government, Elections of 1800-style, they would assuredly split, but what constitutes the "middle" would shift left. I mean, one hundred years ago, the political "middle" was a position where segregation was normalized and tolerated by both parties. To move the country left, you first have to destroy the old right. The more the right-wing has to reinvent itself to fit within a left-wing paradigm shift, the better.

[up][up]The economically left ones (the "Sanders wing", so to speak) seem to be taking over the name "progressive" right now, so I'd assume they would go with that one. For "Federals" I've got no clue unless there's an agreement during the split for neither party to use the old name.

Good news, everyone!

Because stable banks are for nations not run by perennial chapter 11 filers, Trump is going to trash Dodd-Frank, and throw out that fiduciary rule that keeps investors from screwing over their clients for personal gain. [1]

No man, fuck off. I had to learn the new ways of doing stuff and the new forms required by Dodd-Frank, and I'd really rather you NOT invalidate a decent chunk of my undergraduate education. I redesigned other courses to teach our students how these new regulations affect us.

I mean, the imminent financial collapse thing is serious, but I am also personally affected, and that has me almost as mad as the obvious, serious, universal stuff.

IIRC, Dodd-Frank was presented to the banks as "take this deal or we break out Glass-Stengal level of pain instead."

Mostly the burdensome part of it is the reporting regulations. It spawned its own job description in the IT sector to bring software, etc in compliance.

Dodd Frank could've gone further, but considering congressional make up at the time it's pretty damn good for what it was.
