Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I've just finished reading the meat of End This Depression Now!
and it has the potential to promote one of the most crucial economic messages of modern times if we can get it spread widely enough. I dearly hope Obama reads a copy, or at least a summary.
Everything Krugman has been blogging and writing columns about for the past two years is in there, and it's spelled out in a way that leaves no questions as to what needs to be done. I've sigged a link to it and hope to do more.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"augh why must the internet constantly give me new reading material when i dont even have the time/energy to reread my favorite books
:(
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterI wonder what Ron Paul is doing now that there's no one else left challenging Romney.
Now using Trivialis handle.
You mean through the use of unbound delegates who pledged themselves to him?
It actually makes sense in Minnesota, though. With Santorum gone, the unbound delegates decided to pledge themselves to Paul, allowing him to take the majority of delegates in Minnesota.
Which means... PAUL WON HIS FIRST STATE!

If Paul is competitive enough at the RNC to give Romney a run for the nomination, I will laugh, and laugh, and laugh, and laugh.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's un-democratic (and un-American, in my opinion), but it's possible.
I would actually feel bad for Romney though, regardless of how much I despise his corporatist views.
They will shit bricks. Hell, they'll shit brick houses.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.@Skatepunk: I would not. Romney's complete lack of anything resembling a concept of common morality may not be his fault per se, but he is actively collaborating in his own corruption. The dude could have a spine hidden away somewhere in that mass of jelly he calls a body, but if he has one, I haven't seen it.
@Tomu: A brokered convention, I believe, in which suddenly Santorum, Gingrich, or even Cain could suddenly rise up and claim enough delegates to sway the nomination in their favor. An amusing thought, as it would almost surely herald the complete self-destruction of the party in the actual election.

True. It is no longer possible for Paul to get 1,144 delegates.
THAT would SUCK! (Or rock, if you like Obama enough). Your Mileage May Vary.

because there is new information I want to absorb but do not have the time/energy to absorb it.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterVideo: Bachmann endorses Romney.
The person who wins the presidential election will probably have to put up with quite a lot of mocking from political cartoons.
Whoever wins will be accused of violating the constitution at least once. A specific phrase said by whoever-it-is-that-wins will become pretty much a meme.
If you want any of my avatars, just Pm me I'd truly appreciate any avatar of a reptile sleeping in a Nice Hat Read Elmer Kelton booksStewart pointed out last night how the anti-Mormons among the Republicans' various rhetorical mouthpieces have done a rather amusing about-face with respect to Romney.
At one point, it was that a Mormon in the White House would be an abomination — a "false god", as it were, tearing down American religious values. Now that he's the presumptive nominee, we have the same people saying (paraphrased), "Well, it's true that Obama is a Christian, but he's a Democrat, so we'll go with the Mormon who 'shares our belief in the Bible'."
These people appear immune to the concept of their own hypocrisy.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Just imagining the catch-22 religious conservatives are in is sadistically satisfying!
@Fighteer
I'm honestly not sure what they're basing that proposition on. You're supposed to obey the government in any reasonable circumstance, and if you disagree with its actions, follow civil disobedience. So what if the new leader isn't fit? It's not the end of the world.
Now using Trivialis handle. So my Financial Markets class has been discussing the Fed a lot lately.
Here's a gem from the 2000 election:
John Mc Cain stated that, "If Chairman Greenspan died, he would prop him in his chair and go on."
Funny how Greenspan had such a legendary appeal to him while he was chairman. Bernanke isn't getting that kind of treatment...
I forget-who all did the Republicans campaigning say they'd replace Ben with?
