The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More arrests at Standing Rock. I'm also hearing rumors that there is still construction going on, but I haven't found a reliable source for that.

I confess, the way Putin is responding I'm beginning to wonder if Obama's attempt to sanction the Russians now has potential to backfire.

The Latest: Trump praises Putin for response as 'very smart': http://bigstory.ap.org/a5c0672fdcf846189fdf79140d073812&utm_source=android_app&utm_medium=copy_to_clipboard&utm_campaign=share

The trick is to create a situation so difficult to resolve that Trump and the Republicans will be explaining their failures until 2020.

My worry is Putin being reasonable has the potential to make Obama seem the belligerent one, which means the failure will appear to lie with the Democrats

I think the main point is that when Putin screws Trump over - which will happen eventually - Obama will look like the wise one. Plus, a lot depends on the proof he intends to show in January. If it is damning, Trump will look like a fool....not that this is an uncommon state of affairs.

A bit of possibly hopeful good news: North Carolina Judge Blocks GOP Power Grab Against Democratic Governor.

Further details and confirmation.

And a great page topper too!

The President-Elect is openly siding with a hostile foreign dictatorship over his own country. I think Reagan is past the point of turning in his grave - he must be punching his way out like Beatrix Kiddo by now.

[up][up][up] Well, let's not count our chickens just yet. I want to see the judge actually strike it down before I start celebrating.

For those wondering, the tweet from last page is the standard stuff reviling CNN for talking about the election hacking and praising Fox for their usual 'but what if Obama?!?!?!' reporting.

It's been fun.

Specifically, he said this:

Russians are playing @CNN and @NBC News for such fools - funny to watch, they don't have a clue! @Fox News totally gets it!

I don't think even he knows which side he's on.

That Tweet almost makes it sound like this whole election rigging stuff is a distraction from some more nefarious plot.

[up][up] Oh, I think he does.

[up] I think it's certainly a means to an end, not a goal in and of itself. I mean, Putin basically wants to destroy Western democracy - and possibly establish global Russian domination.

True but making America his puppet is a part of that goal. This makes it sound like Putin has some other plan in mind.

I mean, he's pretty openly outing Russia as having some influence, which is completely contrary to his previous statements and stance.

Why do I get the feeling that Trump is going to slip up and admit that Putin helped him win.

RBluefish Since: Nov, 2013

He's got no real reason to hide it anymore - he already won.

Notice that literally the only issue he's remained consistent on is Russia and Putin. With everything else, he rants, he flip-flops, he spews incomprehensible gibberish. But it's almost like he's scared to say a single bad word against Putin.

[up] Don't forget his tax returns.

It's amazing. The man is so easily triggered by the smallest shit, but when it comes to his taxes his locks that shit down harder than Fort Knox

I genuinely wish someone at the IRS would just take one for the team and release whatever the fuck is in there.

[up][up]Eh, he still can't flat out admit "Putin helped me win." Doing that would make his administration fundamentally illegitimate. Even most of the Republicans wouldn't be able to back him after that.

I remember it like a dream: the summer when President Obama (or was it Michelle Obama) made an ad about grilling your food thoroughly to avoid food poisoning. And then Fox news comes out in favor of food poisoning.

How can we survive, when a quarter of our nation rejects reality, and half of it can't be bothered?

[up] Wait, seriously? I feel like that bit about Fox has to be a joke, but...there's honestly no way to tell anymore.

Also - Russian hackers reportedly penetrated the US power grid through a utility in Vermont.

Well, pretty soon they won't even need to hack us anymore. Trump will just give them the passwords to whatever they want.
