The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pretty much. The Democrats don't actually need to stoop to the GOP's level to win - they just need a level playing field, because they have the mandate.

Which is why the GOP have been taking a frickin' backhoe to the playing field at every opportunity.

Y'know, Iowa is pretty much the only swing state the GOP won that isn't near the bottom of that list.

The GOP fighting this dirty just tells me that even they don't believe their ideas will actually benefit anyone but the very rich.

Oh yeah, they have no illusions about their policies doing anybody any good. They just don't care, and are hoping to be able to fool the masses long enough to seize power.

Which they have succeeded overwhelmingly in doing.

[up] That's actually somewhat reassuring to me. It would actually be worse if they really did believe they were helping America. I'd rather take corrupt over outright insane and delusional. There's a chance you can convince the corrupt to do something good for pragmatic reasons. There's no reasoning with the crazy. That said, the corrupt are of course far more disgusting and worthy of contempt.

Then again, they could be both. I'm pretty sure it's not just greed and a desire for votes that motivates the more bigoted members of the GOP.

My opinion of the GOP hasn't been that good since the Dubya administration, but it really went downhill this year.

The GOP doesn't have to care about anyone but the rich. They don't see the lower and middle-class people. They'll just find ways to cheat them out of their basic human rights and even their right to survival, and Fox News and the conservative pundits with merchandise to sell and radio shows to get ratings for are in lockstep with them.

Even when people are too proud and prejudiced to realize that it works against their best interests. Or too fucking stupid. The educational system probably helps with that.

[up] Why do you think the GOP constantly tries to cut public education in favor of shit like charter schools and private school vouchers?

It's that and the fact that they've got money riding on those things.

If you ask me, is the other way around: they are deluded enought to belive they should be in power and only them it would be good.

Or let me put it bluntly here: THINKS ARE GOOD BECAUSE WE DO IT, AND WE DOIT BECAUSE IS GOOD

that is what the republican party have become.

Seriously.

I mean, look at Bannon. Declares himself a Leninist. States his intention to tear down our systems of government. Voices his admiration for Darth Vader and Satan, and says that "darkness is good."

Or Pruitt. The guy is basically a Captain Planet villain.

Trump himself? I keep expecting a team of scrappy, do-gooder (and eminently marketable) kids to show up and expose him for what he is. Probably with the help of a cheerful dog.

I can't wait until they're the ones claiming that everything is fine, when it's blatantly obvious that they're not and Rome is burning.

I think it will be very hard for Trump to realize that Presidents are never universally beloved. It will quite the Oh, Crap! moment. I'm finding it hard to drum up much sympathy for that.

Wouldn't it be great if he doesn't run for a second term and stomps off like a petulant child?

[up]My God. Do you know what this means? It means that unless we save Vice President Pence from a terrible fate, the future as we know it will be DOOMED! And That's Terrible. No, seriously, it is, because it means we actually have to fucking save Pence. Because we don't want giant robots walking around putting us in giant conversion therapy death camps thanks to Pence becoming a martyr, do we?

I wonder what dirty little secrets he has hidden away somewhere.
