Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@164,470: For the same reason Republicans accused Democrats of helping Al-qaeda during the Bush years; to discredit opposition. Also in this case, to discourage people from looking at the e-mails. As for why other agencies haven't corrected them, they might suspect (and might be correct) that the Director Of National Intelligence was pressured to come to the conclusion it did and that the rest of them could be fired or imprisoned for speaking out. I think I speak for Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden when I say that Obama hasn't been particularly kind to whistle blowers.

I don't think binary is the right word here. I just feel that whatever flaws Clinton has are irrelevant when her theoretical worst is still better than Trump's actual best. Makes it hard to see what the big deal is.
You're fond of pointing out Clinton has issues, but my only real thought is "And?"
Since I didn't use any buzzwords, I'm assuming

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotHave you ever heard about Argentina's political history?
BTW: you were completely right about the guy that would start to slowly move the goalposts.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV@164,473: I'm annoyed by people acting like Clinton's issues aren't issues at all just because they're not as bad as Trump's issues (which is a pretty low bar, and keep in mind that so far I've mostly focused only on the issues revealed by the e-mail leak, which aren't even the worst ones). I'm annoyed that pointing out Clinton's issues often gets one painted a Trump supporter or a sexist "Bernie bro". But most of all, I'm annoyed that people are bemoaning the leaks as if important info should be withheld from the public to trick them into voting a certain way for the greater good, which is an alarmingly anti-democracy position. I'd expect this from conservative Republicans, but I'd hoped that most of my camp was better than this. I guess not.
OK, so why exactly do you think all facets of government activities and what government employees should be open for all and sundry to comment on, spin and sabotage?
Do you seriously think that the lout on the other end of the bar who wants to solve every geopolitical issue ever by turning large swathes of terrain into glass is somehow equivalent to a beleaguered bureaucrat who is seriously considering turning to private enterprise?

I personally think they are irrelevant because, along with her supposed worst paling in comparison she lost in a way equivalent to a heavyweight prizefighter being knocked out by a 90 lbs weakling.
Between that and given that I regarded Clinton as the single most competent candidate in the bunch, I sincerely don't care what her issues were. They didn't stop her being the best choice then she now they're irrelevant since she's lost and lost badly enough I'd be genuinely surprised if her political career survives.

@164,479: "Supposed" worst? This is another thing that annoys me; other Trump haters are just in denial about Clinton or talking about something they're not well-informed about.
And really, bad things from Clinton are irrelevant if she's not as bad as Trump? Would you want your local police force to think that manslaughter and assault are irrelevant because murder and rape exist?

I don't see how Sealioning applies to public discussion, when you make a public statement about a group as part of a public discussion you don't get to then claim that it's a private statement when challenged on it.

So apparently half of Trump voters are complete fucking morons.
Ugh, I am absolutely disgusted with Trump voters. I thought I was disgusted before, but what I'm feeling now is so much stronger.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThat whole thing with the pizza place pedophilia ring is made absurd by the simple fact that the conspiracy theory depends on the place having a basement. It doesn't have a basement. At all. It doesn't even have a second story. Like, if people spent literally one second looking at the actual building or thinking about it, they'd figure out that it doesn't make any sense. There's literally nowhere for the alleged children to be held.
And it all depends on "secret codes" that pretty much consist of perfectly normal communications that have a completely logical surface meaning, where the conspiracy nuts assumed the words had double meanings...but that the pizza place mentioned wasn't a code word.

I guess I just don't get how anyone can complain about the leaks. Should people be not allowed to know about the misdeeds of the less bad candidate to avoid the risk of them voting for the worse one? Is the info not valuable because it came from our enemy? As much as I hate Trump - and for all the things I've pointed out about Clinton, I Do think Trump is worse - I think it's crazy to be angry about the leaks happening. That's my main point. I'm sorry we got off track.

Hence the fellow who entered the place with a rifle surrendering (again, it goes without saying that if he weren't white he wouldn't have lived to report that) upon discovering that inconvenient fact.
The people who live in the neighbourhood know that as well. The problem starts with those who believe that memes can rewrite the fabric of reality.

"She felt she was being forced to perform for this monster," Mary told Marie Claire.com in an exclusive interview. "I wouldn't feel comfortable standing near a man like that in our costumes," said another dancer in an email to her colleagues.

That Argument would hold weight if there were consistent leaks on Trump, which there weren't. There was the leak of his '96(?) Tax Returns, of his attempts to defy the Cuban Embargo in '99, and the Early 2000's tape were he said lewd things, but that's it. You know jack shit about anything Trump has done that you would want to know, especially compared to Hillary's Closet (which isn't as nasty as people make it out to be).
The leaks were consistently against Clinton, and there was hardly anything on Trump at all, and the few things there were were basically scoffed at as "not issues" or "Lies". But Pizza Places and "Spirit Food", those are the true big issues!
And keep in mind, I didn't really like Clinton and I voted for Johnson, but for someone who's so pro-Leaks, it seems you don't want to learn anything about Trump through leaks.

The issue with the leaks were that they were used like a weapon. It wasn't one big leak which was discussed once and then laid to rest, the "leaks" were well-timed and most of them were pretty much a non-issue, especially the supposed reopening of the case against Hillary one week before election.
In addition, there were incidences which suggest that at least some of the Republicans actually knew when those leaks would be happening. And if the member of the government of the united states works together with a foreign group which broke into the white house, that would make them basically traitors.
It also begs the question what those people might have on selected Republicans. I mean, if you have information on someone, you either use them to blackmail or destroy said person.

Why would they lie about Russian interference?
And if they were, why have none of the other agencies corrected them?
Oh really when?
