Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If it helps your decision making at all, alt-righters (including the worst of quislings like Milo Yiannopolis) pre-emptively declared that it would happen.
Almost like a set-up, if you will.
They knew it was coming up, and they struck first to haze the truth and make it difficult for those reporting hate crimes to make their story known.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you6 times, not all Trump's personal doing
@M84: During the Cold War there was a proposal
to have the nuclear launch codes (or at least some component) surgically implanted behind an aide's heart, who would also carry around a knife, meaning that if the President wanted to launch a nuke, he would have to personally stab the aide to get to the codes thus meaning that the President would have to know what it's like to take a man's life before ending those of millions. Naturally it was shot down.

TRUMP: Pence, be a good boy and stab Billy in the chest would you?
PENCE: But—
TRUMP: Tell you what, you stab him in the chest and I'll pass whatever fucked up anti-gay laws you want. I mean, I'd pass 'em anyway, but it's the thought that counts.
PENCE: ...Ah, what the hell? {Stabs Billy in the chest.}

One hate crime I see popping up is women's hijabs being pulled off, which is harassment, and in a couple cases set on fire, which I would guess is an actual crime.
In any case, I always get the feeling that Trumpers or conservatives who say these hate crimes are faked would also be okay if they weren't fake. They never act like they're offended that someone would imply their side is full of crazy bigots, or say something like "How dare they accuse us of being racist." As much as they act like they have a moral high ground, they don't do anything in particular to prove it.
So Teh Trump Team can't find any A-List celebrities that would want to perform at his inauguration
Meanwhile The Rockettes are basically forced to perform. Lest they get fired
Such symbolism for this inaguation and the next (and hopefully only) 4 years: Forcing a group of women to do something with their bodies against their will.
In regards to a new nuclear arms race
, Trump says "bring it on."

Trump really needs someone to tell him that some decisions have consequences that no amount of money or political power in the world can shield him from.
This is what happens when an overgrown Spoiled Brat gets his tiny baby hands on some real power.

Disgusted, but not surprised
I think (and hope) Trump is bluffing. He's pretty infatuated with President Nixon, and seems particularly partial to his "madman theory". That's probably the best case scenario regarding Trump and nukes. Unfortunately, that for of deterrence is absolutely toxic to global stability, and is very unlikely to work against the non-state actors which are in his crosshairs right now, and INCREDIBLY risky when it comes into contact with someone else engaging in brinksmanship, namely Putin.

You know, much has been said about how impulsive and unpredictable Trump is, but on one aspect he's remarkably consistent: he will never let anyone make him look "weak", and will respond with bigly bombast in kind, thumping his chest like a drooling orange gorilla. In a way this makes him rather easy to manipulate, since you can ensure a fuckup if you just taunt him enough.
I'm sure world leaders are already keenly aware of this and preparing accordingly.

Speaking as someone who lives within 20 miles of multiple important counterforce nuclear targets (and as a member of humanity as a whole, but especially that first bit), I would very much appreciate it if Trump stopped rattling that nuclear saber because I rather prefer my constituent particles where they are.
But hey, guys, it was Hillary who was going to start a nuclear war, right?

Well his businesses DID go bankrupt like what, 4 to 6 times? I forget the actual number.
