There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

The "Force the Gulf States to pay for it" bit sounds an awful like like "Make Mexico pay for the wall".
Yeah, that's coming right out of USA taxpayers' wallets. Or the deficit. Or both.
Come to think of it, does Trump still not get the difference betwen Shi'ite and Sunni?

Disgusted, but not surprisedA thread on Trump's history with nuclear weapons, and how it overlaps with Russia.
TL;DR: For almost three decades, Trump has been professing his desire to partner up with Russia and use nukes against anyone they don't like - including Europe and the Middle East. He will soon be in control of thousands of nuclear weapons, and is firmly in Putin's pocket. And he and Putin issued nearly-identical statements about nuclear weapons within 24 hours of each other.
Don't forget the fact that Trump has been recklessly escalating tensions with China, to the point where they made an unambiguous nuclear threat against Taiwan. And that his sudden desire to expand the States' nuclear arsenal will not go unnoticed by the international community.
We're not headed for a repeat of the Cold War, though.
Because in the Cold War, the threat of mutually assured destruction functioned as a deterrent. This would be two aggressive nuclear superpowers ruled by dictators - one of whom is a glorified puppet of the other.
Trump seriously needs to pay visits to nuclear testing sites so he can witness first-hand exactly what a nuclear weapon can do.
Come to think of it, this is something I think anyone in charge of a nuclear power should do at least once in their lives.
There should also be people nearby to gauge their leaders' reactions to witnessing that kind of destructive power unleashed.

Disgusted, but not surprisedMost reasonable people would be horrified by such a spectacle, and resolve to never use such cursed things if it's ever remotely possible to avoid it.
Trump would just get a yuge boner and go "shit, I've gotta get me some more of those."
I really, really hope we can get through the next 4+ years without the use of nuclear weapons, but that possibility is looking frighteningly slim. At the very least, there will be way too much sabre-rattling for comfort.
I mean, imagine if Trump had been in charge during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."![]()
Hmm, that would be a damper wouldn't it. At the very least, they should watch movies based on the idea of a nuclear holocaust like The Day After. Supposedly that was what got Reagan to take the threat of nuclear weapons more seriously.
I suspect everyone in the USA today would be taking nukes a lot more seriously if those nukes that were accidentally dropped in North Carolina actually went off.

Disgusted, but not surprised
No, but it was damn close. Most of the failsafes, um, failed on one of them. The other one just broke in half and the uranium went missing.

Disgusted, but not surprisedthe republican party is in a intersting place right now: first to explain better all this of "they have turn in party of evil" like bluefish said, is not like they put party over country, instead they are worse: party IS country, everything is fine as long they have power because as long they have power everything is fine, for year the RP have become a shadow of themselves and it show as they have become more distant and uncaring always resorting to dogwhistle that everyone know it will never pay off.
So, I will just said here: is really a surprise how Trump hijack the party? he is pretty much everything the RP always belive but without the cojones to actually step up because it would taint the party, something that it happen anyway.
Now the republican party is forever link to Trump, whatever they wanted or not. this is going to be intersting to watch.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"You'd like to think that world leaders understand that nuclear weapon usage is essentially an extinction level event but I'm recalling this one story about how Castro was asking the USSR to detonate some nukes in the waters between the US and cuba just to show em who's boss. He was so insistent on this idea that the soviets had to send some eggheads to explain in very simple terms that if the cold war ever went hot literally every human being would die. I'm really hoping some folk have a sit down with trump.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Re: this post from a few pages ago
- like father, like son, I guess?
And yeah, it won't do anything to anyone because there is no such thing as justice.
It's been fun.The United States Postal Service will not be taking a holiday on Christmas Day.
Honestly, what is the point of this? Can't people wait one day or two for their letters? I get that certain people have to work on Christmas because, well, people don't just stop being ill just because it is a special day of the year, and there are always emergencies, but I don't consider the postal service of all things necessary.
Not to mention emergency services.
The office where I work does same-day tests for infectious diseases using a highly automated TEM-PCR procedure. If Fed-Ex is open, we're open because that's how we get our samples.

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you@Trump and Nukes: While the thought of Trump just blasting everything to kingdom come because he can does give me the willies, I don't think that's really going to happen. Not just yet anyway. As far as I understand it, we can't actually send out the nukes unless a general or some sort complies with Trump's order. In other words, he can't just say 'Blow 'em up' and have it magically happen; someone else also needs to say 'You heard the man, blow 'em up', and unless that happens, we can't blow 'em up. And I'm willing to reckon that even some of the... less than savory aids and generals that Trump's going to have serving him in Washington at least know just what the full effects and repercussions of a nuke going off would be. And I don't think they're going to comply with an order to blow 'em up if their target isn't threatening to do the same.
Trump also has his daughter serving as First Lady, and she actually has some common sense in her noggin. With any luck, she'll be able to convince Trump that maybe blowing someone up just because they looked at you funny isn't such a good idea. And on top of that, Putin himself doesn't really want the world blown up, because how can he rule the world if it's a smoldering crater? If Trump looks like he's really going to go nuke crazy, I think Putin can set him straight. (God, I can't believe I'm saying that...)

Okay, so I have a question that I can't just google because I don't know whom to trust. I've been reading that a lot of hate crimes done in the name of Trump are turning out to be fake. Now, I think that's bullshit from Trump supporters trying to make the liberals look bad, but I want to make sure that I know the truth. I know most of you here are on the left, but I also believe that you guys believe in the truth first. So, have most of these hate crimes been hoaxes? I know that a few are fake, but I also believe that the Trumpers are taking these and saying it proves that all are fake.
I haven't done that much reading into the matter but I don't think something like this is that easy to verify either, since a lot of it ends up being anecdotal and would require a lot of detective work to figure out the actual story.
It should go without saying that some of them are going to be fake, but just how many of them is probably hard to say.

I've been doing some research, and I think I've found how Trump is so incredibly bad at negotiation. It depends on whether it's money upfront or money afterwards. If he pays after the construction or service is done, at best he'll try to haggle it into nothing or he just won't pay. If he pays up front, he apparently just goes for the initial offer without haggling at all.
Like, he'll pay whatever he's asked if it's a choice between paying or not getting it at all, regardless of whether or not the price is reasonable. If he has to pay afterwards, he'll always try to get out of the cost. I have a feeling that with the Carrier deal, they just said "We want these tax breaks and seven million dollars, and we won't move our workers", expecting Trump to try and haggle, but then he just said "Great, we have a deal, Pence get on it." Especially since the deal happened so quickly there was no time for negotiations.
He also doesn't bother trying to haggle or negotiate when it isn't his money on the line, which is the sign of a very stupid businessman. You want to minimize your costs, regardless of where the money comes from.

And if he only cares about propping up Assad, then that's not a Safe Zone for non-Shi'ites; they'll still flee in massive numbers to Europe.
