Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I should mention that my dad didn't bother to vote since we live in California. He hasn't voted once in the past few decades.
Honestly, I'm hoping against all odds that my dad is right about Trump not being a complete fuck up. Since if he fucks up big time, we will all suffer.
I'm thinking of making a bet with my dad about whether or not Trump will fuck up the economy or something. Except I'm not sure I'd be happy about winning.

Disgusted, but not surprisedNope. As sad as it has to be, Trump HAS to fail.
Not just for Democrats to win, but because there's a giant elephant in the room:
If after all this hysteria and Trump doesn't fail, what happens when, inevitably, another Trump who's infinitely smarter and charismatic comes along? All of the hate, none of the baggage or stupidity?
Our cries of hysteria at this new Trump will go ignored, and when he does get elected, he's going to be the one who truly finishes what Trump started.
So, no. Trump CANNOT be allowed to be a good President. It's going to suck. It's going to suck, badly, but the alternative...? Well...you already know.
New Survey coming this weekend! On the subject of families, we had my mom's side of the family - my grandmother, my aunt (my mom's sister), uncle and two cousins - over for Thanksgiving. My aunt's family, at the very least, are pretty committed Pennsylvania Democrats, and while I believe my grandmother might be a Republican, she did not like Trump at all. They all voted Clinton, so there wasn't much disagreement on that front.
As for my dad's side...I don't know, we don't see them that often (it was something of a surprised when my mom's side of the family all decided to come out, for that matter). I think that at least a few of them lean more conservative, but my dad's sister visited this summer, and she very vocally disliked Trump. As for everyone else, I don't know. Mind you, my dad was from a family of seven kids, six of whom (including him) are still alive, so there are a lot of grandkids (and great-grandkids). I'd expect that there's a pretty wide range of opinions. From the way my dad has talked about one of his brothers (who also happens to be my godfather), though, he seems more...well, I don't know the specifics, so we'll say "old-fashioned". I do know that my aforementioned aunt made some vague allusions to him at least sounding sympathetic to Trump, or something like that?
Hopefully, this Christmas passes without incident.

Oh God! Natural light!I mean, obviously the best case scenario is 'despite all logic and evidence, Trump somehow turns out to be a good president.'
But, y'know, none of us see any reason to believe that's going to happen. And there is a possibility that the negative consequences of his presidency won't be immediately obvious enough to actually cost him support among the people who got him elected.
It should also be mentioned that Trump needs to fuck up in a way that's clear to the average voter. Fortunately that shouldn't be too hard for him to do. Unfortunately it means we might have to test how true accelerationism is. It might be best to let him muck everything up in the short term so we can rally voters in 2018 and 2020.
Granted, what I'm worried about is the "not accelerationist enough" types that think that The Purge would be a great idea in real life.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotPart of me said "Democrats need to give Trump enough rope to hang himself with. If they go obstructionist, let alone accelerationist, they'll just get blamed for his actions."
Part of me answered "Trump supporters do not run on logic. It is pointless to try to earn their love. Focus on everyone else."
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.....wow.

I honestly have the feeling that this mind-set is stronger in older and/or middle-aged people.
