Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yachting is not a sport.
Horses can be affordable and practical if you live in the right environment, although the things eat like black holes. And they're quite dangerous to ride in normal mode, let alone in a competitive team ball sport, I mean the injury rate there must be amazing for both animals and riders...
Foxhunting... like, the full theatrical thing, with dogs and horses and horns? Isn't that illegal now? Also, isn't it silly? Never mind, all sports are silly at heart. That's why we love them.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.@Swanpride You've been following the recent comics, right? Steve Rogers was retconned by a Reality Warper into a HYDRA agent. It's disturbingly appropriate. TBF, this storyline started last year.
I don't think this is going to be changing anytime soon.

Disgusted, but not surprisedBack on the topic of politics, Trump keeps tweeting about the popular vote.
You'd think that officially winning the EC would be enough to placate him, but no, he keeps complaining that he would've won the popular vote too if he had campaigned differently. The term "sore winner" immediately springs to mind. You won. What more do you want?

I would love for Trump to be Hoist by His Own Petard by pushing for and successfully abolishing the electoral college, only to find that no, he can't convince New Yorkers and Californians to vote for him.

I think we've gone over this previously but his ego (and base, but mostly ego) is such that he has difficulty accepting that the majority of people who voted actually rejected him. Hence the attempts to decry reports following Hillary's PV lead as fake news and the claims about millions of "illegals" voting.

What about upstate NY?
There's this old tweet of his calling the EC a blight on the US. Granted, he's shown all the signs of flip flopping on everything to date...

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot"DC's been using Luthor as a Tea Party analogue for a decade now."
Hadn't he gotten a Heel–Face Turn nowadays?
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVIt's also imperative that our infrastructure remain terrible, if only to sabotage Trump's presidency further. Girding his efforts with Democratic assistance or all of their work will make it look like a triumph of Republican leadership if it succeeds.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
The democratic base isn't reliable and consistent in the same way the republican base is, so it's going to be harder for congresspeople to play the obstructionism game without being voted out. By all means we should fight tooth and nail against his more odious proposals that the democratic base actually opposes, but blocking infrastructure spending just because is not going to work out for the democrats.

The infrastructure spending may not actually yield much actual infrastructure since instead of the government actually using money to build things the plan consist primarily of private sector incentives, some of which is going to things that are already in the process of happening.
So yeah, all that may happen is that the plan just balloons the deficit and debt in a time when the Federal Reserve is specifically trying to discourage that by raising interest rates.
Because are filled with uppity intellectuals and "those" people, who obviously aren't real hard working Americans.

Eh, giving Trump cronies the chance to render themselves public pariahs by embezzling funds earmarked for infrastructure might do that already.

If the GOP compromises with the democrats (and Trump is probably fine with doing that on infrastructure so long as he isn't personally getting taxed), the amount of effective spending will be much higher.

It helps that it's really fucking boring, without that much health benefit, and dangerous as hell.
Golf is still an upper-class thing in southern latitudes where heat and sunlight make lawns prohibitively expensive in water and fertiliser.
What do the rich do now? Skydiving?
And why in the world is horseback riding a girl thing now?!
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
