Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Beary Scary I was half joking....I would attest most Americans a lack of culture, since I was unfortunate enough to experience them in restaurants and cultural sites often enough, but I am sure at least half of them (plus nearly three millions) have decent values....though they all could use the habit to look past their borders and learn from the history of countries which are older than them...and a few which are younger but made their big mistakes early on.
True, the guy is equal-opportunity. You have to admire the dedication of a true, sincere Social Darwinist, the kind that would welcome anyone on pure merit regardless of background, who will welcome any challenges without trying to undermine or discriminate.
It's still unjust, because a minority background lowers your chances by default, but it's better than what fake Darwinists do, which is to add discrimination on top of that.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Plus, while Trump only pretended to be "anti-establishment", Armstrong actually is. It's hard to get more "anti-establishment" than wanting to literally burn it all down. The Cluster F-Bomb he directed at the establishment was also rather amusing.

One of the reasons I voted for HRC was because I was very concerned that the USA would end up making the same mistakes as other countries. I for one can't stand the notion of "American Exceptionalism". When you think you're beyond making mistakes, that's when you're most prone to making them.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWow. Just... I didn't expect them to be so blatant
.
Explanation: a twit from Fox News quoting this:
About that, when would Superman enter public domain? (assuming DC doesn't extend copyright), he's an almost (only thing he needs is diversity) perfect character to do an anti-Trump story: an illegal immigrant who leaves rural Kansas for New York City Metropolis and works in journalism; and his main enemy is a (depending on the version) megalomaniac billionaire who became POTUS (and was sometimes a redhead).
GOP lawmakers afraid to challenge Trump because Breitbart and Hannity will unleash hateful trolls
This is how democracy dies? Edgelords shitposting?

Assuming Disney doesn't lobby Congress for yet another extension to copyright laws in order to keep the exclusive rights to Mickey Mouse (and everything else they own, but particularly their older IPs, like the Classic Disney Shorts, earlier Disney Animated Canon films, and some Marvel stuff like Captain America and Ka-Zar), nothing will enter the public domain until 2019 at the earliest.

Fucking greed...
But whatever, we're probably getting off topic: Obama says he wants to develop a new generation of democratic talent after 1/20/17
. And (facebook link) if anyone here's from South Carolina, there's going to be a special election for 5th district representative since Cheeto Benito gave the guy who holds that seat a position in the executive branch

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVI've sort of had a realization.
I get the distinct impression that the democrats going forward are going to need a lot of things to go right, not just in 2020 but in general.
And the reason for that is, that the Republican party doesn't really need to do anything special. They appeal to the basest, most selfish parts of the american electorate. They can field mediocre or just downright awful candidates like Trump, and they can win because being truly good is HARD. It's much easier to be in denial or to hate.
Meanwhile the democrats might as well need an Obama every single time, a truly exceptional and charismatic individual that can make people feel good about themselves even if they aren't actually. Even then they might have to bank off the previous administration being sufficiently bad that they look like a breath of fresh air which isn't always going to happen. In other words they can't afford candidates like Hillary anymore.
NoName999: Given that there have been several shootings related to the ideologies Trump's Party (well, the Party of Lincoln it ain't now) push like Isla Vista, the shootings at some protest, and the near miss at Comet Ping Pong, concern for your safety and that of your family would be a natural concern.
As mentioned on Enough Trump Spam by someone else, I think it does say something about us that we don't usually expect people to threaten the family members of others in order to gain political leverage.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
x10 This depresses me on so many levels. If there are actually GOPers who want to stand up to Trump but refuse to because they'll inevitably get death threats, well, that's the very definition of a chilling effect, which has no place in a democracy. Before you know it, the same will occur with reporters: Not one critical thing will be said about the Trump administration because otherwise they'll get doxxed and flooded with hate mail.
"OK Congress, I'm thinking of leveling Hawaii to make another golf course." "SOUNDS GOOD, BOSS! HAHAHAHA Please don't kill me, Breitbart..."

I only say borderline because to my understanding despite their underhanded actions it technically doesn't count as treason, far as I'm concerned they've basically sold the American people upriver in the name of profits and giving Democrats the finger.
