Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Germany — they post pretty often in the Europe thread.
The GOP isn't so much the Party of Evil as the Party of Big Oil. Every other awful thing they do is more or less a distraction or a means to dredge up votes from bigots and zealots. The GOP has become an amoral machine that acquires votes with the same mercilessness that the average MegaCorp displays when seeking profit. Even all of the Russia crap boils down to oil — there's a reason Rex Tillerson is going to become the new Secretary of State. Half a trillion reasons to be exact. And Putin for one can't wait to skim a good chunk of that $500 billion.

Disgusted, but not surprised
@R Bluefish Oh, they have definitely done, and are doing, evil crap. But they aren't doing it For the Evulz. It all comes down to money — especially Big Oil money. To keep the oil flowing — to keep the money flowing — they will do anything to keep gathering the votes needed to stay in power. They will also do anything to suppress the votes that could threaten their power.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt is truly, deeply frightening how much Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance relates to... certain recent developments. I'm going to leave it at that for now, because I'm really not comfortable with all of that...
Say what you will about the Winds of Destruction, but at least they have an ethos!

Do not obey in advance.
Someone else on this thread (maybe you?) brought up that "Collective Consciousness" might as well be Trump's Villain Song.
It's worth noting that Armstrong at least didn't actually believe all of that crap. That said, what he actually wanted the USA to become was pretty awful too.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd here I am, having just finished reading Guards Guards.
That book is surprisingly applicable.

Oh God! Natural light! This has the lyrics on screen. Its...really, really unnerving how much it fits him and his methods.
Live in ignorance and purchase your happiness...
While Armstrong did not believe what was said in Collective Consciousness, I honestly think Trump does.
Trump might not have a multistory tall Humongous Mecha (yet), but he will have unlimited authority when it comes to drone strikes.
I just hope he doesn't gold-plate those too.
Yep, Trump probably really thinks that.

You're forgetting the most important difference to most of them: Trump is white.
It is consistent with the GOP's take on the Second Amendment: "The White Man's ability to buy firearms must be protected at all costs, but we have to keep guns out of the hands of those people."

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite."I have feeling that there's like, 30 guys out there watching this going 'oh my god I'd so vote for this guy.' "

So, anyway, Emoluments Clause asides, apparently the Trump International Hotel is considered by Luxury Travel Intelligence to be the third worst new luxury hotel of 2016
.

There are some people who genuinely believe that Hillary Clinton is an evil monster and mass murderer, and Russia teaming up with Trump was Russia's Heel–Face Turn.
