The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Aside from a few local sites, I read CNN (if only for their breaking news, and some of the specials aren't awful), BBC, CBC, and the Economist.

Comedian Tom Arnold has the infamous Trump tapes from the Apprentice.

I’ll tell you why. Because when the people sent it to me, it was funny. Hundreds of people have seen these. It was sort of a Christmas video they put together. He wasn’t going to be President of the United States. It was him sitting in that chair saying the N-word, saying the C-word, calling his son a retard, just being so mean to his own children. Oh, this is so funny, this is this guy. The Sunday before the election, I get a call from Arnold’s CAA agent, sitting next to Hillary Clinton. They said, ‘I need you to release him saying the N-word.’ I said, ‘Well, now these people – two editors and an associate producer — are scared to death. They’re scared of his people, they’re scared of they’ll never work again, there’s a $5 million confidentiality agreement.’

My advice right now, on the best way to fight back against people like Anglin, and the movements Trump represents? Get involved, get informed and help others do the same. Be active in local politics, attend Democratic party meetings, learn about all the local government measures and organize, canvass, march, etc. for ballot measures, collect signatures, etc.

The Dakota Access Pipeline fight is gonna be a blueprint for what will need to happen. It's going to be a combination of political activism in the traditional sense, and peaceful protesting of people putting their bodies on the line, with a need to raise awareness

[up] My rage at this comedian is...considerable right now.

[up][up] Doesn't mean a lot if there's no intention to do anything with them. Though I can't help but fear Arnold's right that it would make some people like him even more.

Tom Arnold seems like kind of a random guy to have those. Those last couple of paragraphs are kind of telling regarding how Trump has gotten his way in life so far, though. Kind of frightening.

And I get my news from MSNBC and here, when I can get past whatever paywall may exist on what you guys post.

Americans still voted for Trump after he gloated about committing sexual assault. I'm not sure if anything else, beyond a revelation that he has been moonlighting as a serial killer or something, would have made a difference.

Tax evasion, rape, nothing made a difference in the end.

@Lightysnake

I have seen and heard such advice before, it is similar to the tactics we used after our defeat in 2008. We spent the next two years mobilizing what became known as the Tea Party and exploiting multiple factors that were critical of the Obama Administration to take back control of the House of Representatives. After 2012 we utilized them again to take back the Senate.

The people who'd like him more were already going to vote for him, it might have cost him enough undecideds to swing the election.

God dammit they couldn't have just released the tape and crowd funded the fine?

[up][up] To many people the pussy grabber tape wasn't him admitting to sexual assault, it was him using a naughty word, no that doesn't make sense, but that's how it was seen by many. Also that was old news by that point, a fresh Trump scandal just before the election would have sunk him, him being kept on message the last week is a big part of what won him the election.

I worry if the behavior we have witnessed in this previous election cycle will set the precedent for elections in the future. Will they be from now on a flurry of insults and scandals? Will elections from now on be about who we DON'T want to be President?

This is more a failure of the left to vote in off-years than anything.

There's a pattern that when people showed up to vote the right-wing suffered resounding and deserved defeats. The Tea Party is deserving of no respect whatsoever.

[up][up][up] I'm pretty sure a good chunk of GOP voters in 2012 weren't voting for Romney, but rather because "I don't want the (black) guy who is already in the WH to be re-elected."

The Tea Party is deserving of no respect whatsoever.

[up] [up] I personally think of it as more of an example of our ability to motivate our voters.

[up] Indeed, many of the Republicans I know were not voting to put Trump in the White House so much as they were voting to keep the Clintons out of the White House.

I suppose it has been a consistency in our elections for quite a while now. I guess I did not want to believe it but this election forced many to accept what could become a prevalent electoral reality.

A cop out. There is literally zero difference between the two. Clinton was hated due to phony scandals, sexism and immense double standards. Trump is loathed because he is an unqualified oaf coasting on white nationalism.

[up][up][up] While it's certainly debatable how accurate it was, Hamilton posits that this has been happening since the earliest days of the USA.

[HAMILTON] The people are asking to hear my voice

[ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] For the country is facing a difficult choice

[ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] And if you were to ask me who I’d promote—

[ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] —Jefferson has my vote

[JEFFERSON/MADISON/ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] I have never agreed with Jefferson once

[JEFFERSON/MADISON/ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] We have fought on like seventy-five diff’rent fronts

[JEFFERSON/MADISON/ENSEMBLE] Oh!

[HAMILTON] But when all is said and all is done Jefferson has beliefs. Burr has none

[up] My initial thinking was "I'm against Trump more than I am for HRC". I'm not sure when it changed to "I'm for HRC", but it did. I'm genuinely sorry she lost, and not just because it means Trump is going to be the next POTUS.

[up][up] I was not condoning their rationale anymore than I was condemning the rationale of those who voted otherwise. I also acknowledge that both candidates, in relatively light terms, were severely flawed.

[up] It is feasible that this electoral behavior began during those bitter contests between Adams and Jefferson. Haha I wonder if some among the Founders & Framers could see what was coming and that's why they tried to convince Washington to be President for life.

Washington was smart enough to not want the job. He didn't even want it for one term, let alone the rest of his life. But he resigned himself to accept it — for the good of the country, not for his own self-gratification.

[up][up][up] I wonder if this was part of Evan Mcmullin's appeal among his supporters. He ran less because he wanted the job and more because he didn't want either of the two main candidates to be POTUS (especially Trump).

[up] HRC had her flaws, but none of them were truly severe enough (IMHO anyway) to make her unfit for the Oval Office.

That does not seem to be the case with Trump's flaws.

At the very least, I have no doubt that HRC has actually read the friggin' Constitution at least once or twice.
