Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, the Electoral College votes on Monday, so that's the last real chance of stopping him from assuming office (which is unlikely to happen).
Regardless, he has the votes he needs.

Oh God! Natural light! As far as the "president" part goes it's highly unlikely that he won't be voted on and sworn in. As far as the "fascist" part?
It's well established at this point that Trump's behavior is entirely consistent with autocrats worldwide, he's fomenting a cult of personality based on white nationalism, he's said that people who burn flags should be punished, stated a desire to jail his political opponent, etc.
Of course how many of the things he's talked about he'll follow up on is questionable but the thing is a lot of the supporters who are disappointed with him so far, are mostly disappointed because he isn't enough of an autocrat (i.e him backing down on jailing Clinton).

Re: an electoral revolt. There's pretty much a 0% chance of that happening. Trump's going to be POTUS. Real life is unfortunately not as given to dramatic eleventh-hour turnarounds as we would all like it to be.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Fact is, there are probably just as many deplorables among the electors as there are among the everyday populace. And they're completely immune to reason and rationality, because they can just go "BUT HER EMAILS" and run away.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."I'm seriously starting to think that the GOP really does want to Kill the Poor. And the worst thing is, they've conned the middle class into helping them do it. The middle class whom they will screw over even harder once the poor are out of the picture.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThere used to be a joke: The difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Republicans think Democrats are wrong, and Democrats think Republicans are evil.
Nowadays, it's changed. Republicans think Democrats are evil, and Democrats know that Republicans are evil.
The dogwhistles are gone, dispensed with, no more pretense of making nice. Following Trump's example, Republicans now feel justified in openly expressing all the racism, sexism, and every other -ism that they used to have to keep secret. Not to mention their whole "Fuck the Poor!" attitude about the economy...

This Space Intentionally Left Blank. The Republicans essentially work by appealing to the "unfalsifiable". They always blame the people who are suffering for their conditions even if it actually wasn't their fault, because they can always say that you should have worked harder, done more, "pulled yourself up by your bootstraps", etc. It's not dissimilar from a fundamentalist who insists that you couldn't hear God because you didn't pray hard enough, even though they don't know anything about you or what you go through.
The middle class goes along with it because they want to believe it's true, and don't want to accept that most of them will never be rich or successful no matter how hard they try.

@ NC Republican Legislature Power Grab: Yeah, that is absolutely terrible, and I feel sorry for the Incoming Governor, and the people of North Carolina. However, I think in the long run, this will be good for the state. Remember, NC was a state that voted for Obama twice, and voted in a Democrat Governor because of the last Governor's Power Grab. The Democrats also gained seats in the lower House, although are still the Minority there. By 2018, I can imagine both Houses becoming Democrat, which would also allow them to redistrict NC in 2020 to be a Solidly Blue State for 10 years. (And yes, I checked, both Houses hold Elections every 2 years.)

Or the GOP continue to rig the game in their favor and never lose again.
You know, there's a reason why I always have to put a locky&key on my imagination. It has a habit of running away from me.

Keith Ellison is wading into the North Carolina fray.
Good. We need all hands on deck for this one. Even if it doesn't get those bullshit laws struck down, anything to create more bad PR for the GOP.

: In my wildest dreams, I gain godlike psychic powers and promptly use them to re-enact that scene from Scanners (you know the one).
In some of my other wildest dreams, I conquer the earth with a robot army, while cosplaying as and completely taking on the persona of Dr. Eggman.
And in some of my other other wildest dreams, I'm forcibly merged with a military computer to become a crude, nuke-controlling AI, and then proceed to show exactly why that's a bad idea, taking inspiration from Skynet, the machines from The Matrix, and AM.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's Dictionary

Worst part is trying to explain all of this to someone else because it's (somewhat understandably) hard to believe that any party could be this much of an embarrassment.
I mean, at least people like Mitt Romney and Evan Mc Mullin much as I disagree with them on social issues still accept stuff like climate change and evolution, and offer SOME amount of empathy towards marginalized groups like the black community and muslims. It may just be lip service but the thing is the GOP as a whole doesn't even do that.
Mc Mullin even went so far as to bluntly state that Trump was fanning the flames of white nationalism, something which puts him a league above the mainstream GOP morally because most of them probably refuse to admit such a thing even exists.
