The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm with Obama here. It wasn't his responsibility to keep Trump out of power, that was up to the American electorate.

Trump is aligned with a foreign dictator.

It was Obama's responsibility to do something about this.

He's rolling over and doing nothing while Putin takes over our country.

Well, democracy's about to be destroyed anyway.

Look at North Carolina. It's happening already.

Obama swore an oath to protect our country from foreign threats and uphold the Constitution.

Now he's handing over the country to authoritarianism, kleptocracy, and foreign influence.

Timetable of Electoral College voting, among other things.

No point in hoping anymore. Now the only thing we can do is buckle down, strap in and get ready for a long and painful fight.

It's been fun.

He's still beating the "give Trump a chance" card? What the fuck, Obama?

This is going to stain his legacy forever. When we needed him most, he walked away.

Did you guys seriously not only want him to subvert the democratic process, but expect him to? That's a new low, even for you.

[down]He didn't order the public execution of Trump and declare himself God Emperor of America. Clearly that makes him an abject failure and will tarnish his entire presidency.

[up][up] I was hoping he might give an order to brief the electors on what's been discovered thus far; it would be perfectly legal for the electoral college to overturn Trump's election.

Based on the lack of such a move, what's been found isn't damning, so that's that.

Donald Trump has conspired with a foreign power to stage a bloodless coup of America. Once in power, the damage he will do to democracy and the entire world is incalculable. His victory was not legitimate, but the result of enemy interference and suppression of votes.

Stopping him would not be subverting democracy, but upholding it.

Blue Fish, I'm a fan of yours, but I gotta say I agree with the others. This is not his fault, nor in his ability to do anything about. His time is over. He can't do anything. That was our job, and Hillary's and we failed.

[up][up][up]Nope. Democracy got him elected, for better or for worse. To go against that outcome would, by definition, go against democracy.

Like Captain Capsase said, the electoral college can still go faithless, but that's outside Obama's jurisdiction. And even then there would be a gigantic fallout from that.

[up][up] Every democracy has safety checks. It is actually the job of the electorate college to keep unfit persons from becoming the president. If that fails, the congress is supposed to keep the president in check. But currently nobody (except for one Republican from the EC) has stepped up and voiced his willingness to stop this.

Also, remember that a number of dictators came into power through election. Being elected is not what makes a leader democratic. It is his conduct in office, him allowing dissenting voices and listening to different opinions.
