Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As unlikely as it is if Obama is going to do anything drastic I really hope that it's force Trump out as an aide of the enemy, and instating Mike Pence in place of him. He's also a Republican who's opposed to Obama so they can't exactly say Obama is trying to enact a coup to hold onto power, and the means by which Pence got the office may taint him enough that his worst shit can't get passed through.

I'm not sure Pence would go along with it though; the only way Obama can legally do that* is to encourage the electoral college to revolt, and that scenario likely sees the decision tossed to the House, which may, in order to curry favor with Trump and with the Republican base, elect him anyway.
* Barring some evidence of something major involving Trump and Russia that would be grounds for his arrest, which I find rather implausible compared to the simpler explanation of Trump and Putin simply having converging interests in this election.

Looks like the GOP is splitting over Trump's Russia policies.

I'm in no mood to be hopeful, but having that party of savages implode would be nice.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Two-minute warning on the press conference and courtesy re-post of the live stream link
for those that want it.
Party over country.
Is the idea of "winning" so deep in the human psyche that there are people willing to throw away previously held beliefs at any cost?
Because it seems to me like they want to "win" so badly, they're willing to commit treason to do so.
What did the Dems do to them that they would sell out their entire country, WILLINGLY?!
New Survey coming this weekend!![]()
One person's treason is another's "internationalism", and if there's one thing that's quite odd about Trumpism compared to previous nationalist movements, it's that it's surprisingly international.
Putin is in some respects an Ur-Example of the kind of nationalistic strongman that the Trump movement idolizes, thus it should come as no surprise that they see him as an ally, and welcome Russia's assistance, despite Russia being fairly indifferent to their ideology beyond its usefulness in furthering Russian geopolitical goals.

It's 7 minutes late by my online-synched clock's reckoning. But at least I managed to take an urgent bathroom break, so it's all good.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. You fight fascism by getting mad and staying mad. The new generation of fascism harbors a few psychoes who could do some actual damage, but most of them are spineless image-board trash who would wilt in the face of real opposition. You show them that we are determined to drum them out of public life, turn them out of society, and keep pressing until their lives are nothing but a shell of endless, futile misery.
Fascism didn't end well for the Fascists (aside from that prick Franco, but he was pretty savvy after the horrors of the Spanish Civil War). We must meet them with opprobrium more ferocious than the fire bombing of Dresden.
In many cases it didn't end well for the people either. Stalinism is an "improvement" over fascism in the sense that it's much less of a threat to global stability by virtue of being a fairly rational actor in international affairs compared to the downright delusional strategic choices made by fascist regimes, but that's a small comfort to those living under such a regime.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyFor reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Dresden_in_World_War_II

10 minutes to Obama's press conference that probably won't come to anything.
