Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think the comparison to the show can be played out to the end.
Well, unless Germany decides to elect a prussiaboo, then all bets are off.

x3 I know, I know. It's just so uncanny what has played out that it makes you wonder what else might.
(And I know that the ending of the show's probably not going to happen, but the coup's only around from Eps 19-26. That's hardly 'playing out to the end.' And also keep in mind that when I'm talking about the show, I'm mostly only talking about the FPA, because that part of the show is what's so damn eerie.)

Fingers crossed for the miracle. Too many lives are at stake.
Though the most realistic guess I can come up with is the suspension if the electoral collage vote until the end of the Russia investigation. Which would be pretty significant in itself, but would also legitimize the eventual Trump presidency.
Obama: The Russian attempt to subvert our elections has left America scarred and deformed but I assure you our resolve has never been stronger. In order to ensure stability and continuity, the republic will be reorganized into the First American Empire with me as it's Emperor for a safe and secure society.
Republicans: I KNEW IT!!!!

So would a Trump/Putin presidency, though.
I want to think that there are legitimate ways Obama could give us a miracle, without having to turn himself into a dictator. One that's been suggested is Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment.
I'm hardly a Constitutional law expert, but if Trump really was both aware of and complicit in Russian meddling in our election - which is an act of war - then it seems to me that this should officially block him from the presidency. But invoking this would effectively require irrefutable proof of Trump's complicity.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."
x4 Hey, anything that keeps Trump and his small hands away from the office as long as possible, even if it's only delaying the inevitable. Though I'm not sure if we're even going to get that. There's no way to know for sure just what Obama's going to do until he does it. For all we know, he could just make some big declaration along the lines of 'We won't rest until we get to the bottom of this!' and that could be that. But here's hoping...

Would be, hell. It's exactly what they're doing right now. Not just with taking over the country via Trump and Putin, but with the sickeningly undemocratic power grab they're probably going to get away with in North Carolina.
And you know what? If the shit they're pulling in NC works, that's going to set a very frightening precedent for the other states. Especially since states' rights may be one of the best weapons we have for resisting Trump.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."
President Obama: For the sake of ensuring the legitimacy of the election's results, I will not leave office until this investigation is done!
<years later>
Emperor Obama: Sorry...still not done. In the meantime, I'm a just gonna spend this sweet new budget surplus on infrastructure spending and health care reform.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAlso, the Press Conference is going to be at 2:15 PM ET.
I guess we'll find out whether or not we'll be getting Emperor Obama then.
He's also apparently planning on going on his annual vacation to Hawaii with his family after said conference. You'd think if he was going to announce that he'd be sticking around as President for a while longer, he'd actually stick around; not just leave the mainland while it's suddenly thrust into arguably more chaos than it already is.

The Libertarian party congratulates Rick Perry on his chance to abolish the Department of Energy.
And no, this isn't an Onion article, this is from the Libertarian Party's official website.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
Everyone loves oil refineries and pipelines...as long as they are Not in My Backyard!.

(Oh, and the same thing basically happened in Legend Of Galactic Heroes, which up to this point has basically been a guidebook for the path our own government is heading down. Call me delusional if you want to, but it could happen in that show's reality, then it could well happen in our own reality.)
