Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The irony there being, I'm pretty sure they didn't need to do any reshoots to make the movie anti-Trump. Even just the writers have been very vocal against him on social media.
I have heard people say semi-seriously that the movie is Trump's worst nightmare, because it's about a female-led group of Asian people, black people, Latino people, and disabled people rising up in forceful revolt against a totalitarian white supremacistnote government.
Back on topic - the Clinton campaign has backed calls for the electors to receive intelligence briefings on Russian interference.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Star Wars has always had anti-fascism and anti-idolatry undertones, unless you're one of the people who is Rooting for the Empire, everyone else is supposed to stand against the self serving and power hungry tyrants.
But hey, these are the same people who think MLP should have a white supremacist message.

I have been having that exact same thought. Right now, it looks like we are perilously close to actual war with China. And if that happens, internment camps will be just a tiny step away. Which means me and my family.
I don't know how Takei stayed loyal. I doubt I will.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."A cold war and/or trade war is the more likely immediate situation. The amount of downhill stuff has to fall for war to turn hot is still immense. There will be sabre-rattling but China is going to be on the defensive here. And many other countries are likely to take their side over ours, especially when our own intelligence community is railing at this.
From Argentina's constitution, in case anyone's thinking of leaving the US.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVI was born in PA. Heck, my American accent is probably better than most. That won't save me if things get to the point of interning anyone who looks Chinese.
Disgusted, but not surprisedRegarding Takei: Uhhhh, because he's American and it's not like he'd have faced less discrimination if he'd moved to Japan or elsewhere? You act like people being shitheads is a reason to be disloyal to country itself. You don't appear to realize what, exactly, it is that he's loyal to here. And you will notice that he's spent much of his life trying to improve conditions instead of just appearing to dump everything like your last few posts have indicated you're willing to do, guys. Plus, you know, if you're a citizen of only one country, it can kind of prove difficult to permanently move elsewhere.
Can we please refrain from engaging in a cesspit of cultural cringe, here? Things are frustrating, things will be hard, but constantly rolling around in "American is shit" is not going to help anything. If it does anything at all, it will merely encourage us not to try.

Yes, yes, let's encourage people to run the fuck away from the problem instead of helping.
@Tactical: 100,000 what? You've provided no context. What are you responding too, there?

Aside from watching as or nation is overtaken by 80's villains despite mountains of evidence of wrongdoings and complete lack of any qualifications, what is there to be done. The media is already bowing to Cheato Benito and dulling the public to what should be abject horror. All the angry white conservatives are celebrating their victory over anybody else having a say in "their" nation while gleefully ignoring that Trump is already screwing them, and Putin is laughing his way to the bank as he prepares to use his former biggest enemy as a club.
What can we do to fight this madness?

Use your voice and hold your leaders accountable. Call your representatives in Congress and demand action, especially with regards to Russian interference. Drown them in calls. Do the same with your senators. You're their constituents and you have the power to pressure them. Keep the heat on and hold their feet to the fire.
Also, excuse the shit out of me for not wanting to be thrown into a concentration camp.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

Saw an article in Finnish, that now the White Supremacists are trying to boycott Rogue One for being "anti-Trump" or some other nonsense.
