Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's appearing to me, more and more, that Trump and his administration are going to be oddballs of Republicanism; something we haven't seen since Theodore Roosevelt (at least on the Republican Side). I can't see the Republicans being the Party of Trump, when they actively go against him and actively disregard him.

This is true, but the Republicans are pushing for Social Security and Medicare cuts, something that Trump said he wouldn't do. If he Veto's it, only for Congress to Over-ride his Veto, then I can safely say that Trump isn't controlling the Republicans, and that Trump's ideology has no power with Mainstream Republicans. Whether this results in Trump being impeached, or Congressional Republicans being "Primaried Out" (which I can't see with the Koch's, not when Trump wants to be an All-Powerful Authoritarian), I can't say.

Nah, Trump is just more blatant about it. He's still about giving tax breaks and favors to the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.
They are the Party of Trump. They've BEEN the Party of Trump even before he ran. Some of them just aren't ready to openly admit it yet.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's wishful thinking, but I'd love to get a fiery young orator up on the debate stage to turn the GOP into ash as the party of fat cats, cronies, and Russian shills. Maybe then people would actually listen.
I don't know what the Democrats would look like with a weak opposition party, but given what Obama was able to accomplish even as a generally moderate/centrist fellow and with Congress constipated with Republicans, I'd like a chance to see it at least once before Trump blithers his way into getting New England nuked.
It's been fun.Jesus tapdancing Christ,
now they're laying down tracks for blaming China for the hacking. Because Trump hasn't escalated things with China enough already.
Oh, and Carter Page, under investigation by the FBI for Russian connections, is holding press conferences...in Russia.
Where he's saying that the U.S. might try to frame them for the hacking.
This is fine. This is fine. This is fine.

If you really want to piss off the Objectivist fanboys in the GOP, call them "looters". Which is what they are.
Hmph. So Trump is still raw about China snubbing him when he first approached them about setting up shop there. Man knows how to hold a grudge.

He just wants to bury it while looking like he's trying to help.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV@M84: At this point, there has to be more to it than a childish grudge. What does Trump, the GOP, or their Russian puppetmasters have to gain by purposefully sabotaging relations with China? Because it's looking increasingly like that's exactly what they're doing.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Well, the political cartoonists are getting a lot out of this
◊. Norwegian this one.
Also that civil rights get rolled back by mere decades, rather than us getting actual concentration camps.
And that when the body count from climate changes starts stacking up, that it numbers in mere millions rather than billions.
In completely unrelated news, I just called my representative to urge him to take action against Russian meddling. Anybody else feel like doing the same? Hold their feet to the fire.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@Why would Putin want to swap China for the US:
I'll quote something Capsase has been saying a few times in the last few pages:
Trump considering Fiorina for Director of National Intelligence
He's literally trying to turn America into America Inc.

New Survey coming this weekend!John Bolton repeated the "China could have done it" line this morning. Sounds like they've got their cover story. Jesus, they might actually turn this to their advantage.
A foreign power interfering in our election would be an act of war. And they want to point the finger at the wrong player.
With Russia/China - what are we talking about here? An actual Russian invasion of Central Asia?
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Rick Perry being considered for Trump's energy secretary.
