The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump is already well on his way to being the worst POTUS we have ever had, and he hasn't even taken office yet.

Fuck.

McConnell rejects call for special committee on Russian hacking allegations, saying the Senate Intelligence Committee is more than up to the task.

That goddamn weasel is controlling the battlefield. He's just as complicit in this as anybody else - why should he even get a say?

[up][up][up][up] And he won't try to do that; I seriously doubt he'll try to stay on past his term limit or even try to repeal it. It's very likely though that he will seek to establish his own political "dynasty" along the lines of the Bush family.

[up] I'm not sure Putin isn't serious about wanting better relations with the United States; there's murmurs going around about the possibility of a Russian power play in central Asia against China and a cooling of Sino-Russian relations, which is something geopolitical experts predicted would happen eventually prior to the annexation of Crimea. That's the main context in which a Russian pivot of that sort makes sense. Unfortunately that just exchanges one extremely hazardous standoff in eastern Europe for another in central Asia and the south China sea.

In Dumb Trump Things, albeit in the "too late, man" category: In which he promises to cut costs from the F-35 project.

Mind you, this is after they finally got things in the air without it catching fire and began pushing unit costs downwards.

So basically he's trying to take credit for someone else's work again.

I, for the sake of the aerospace industry and a lot of countries air forces, hope Trump is just spewing hot air. There is no replacement for the F-35, and for all its faults too many countries have invested in it (plus three branches of the US military). Its too big to kill.

States Rights can help the Democrats now...especially in California. They apparently have the right to refuse to enforce any law they disagree with.

@MadSkillz Isn't the Michigan recount already halted, though? God, it's so frustrating seeing all these blatant causes for a recount or a reevaluation or something and having the government shrug and go 'nah' because they can do that now.

It's been fun.

Yup, the Michigan recount is a goner. It's absolutely asinine and is yet another thing that's just greasing the sides of the chute into hell.

"Sure, 87 voting machines broke on Election Day. In other news, there's no need for a recount."

It's the goddamn GOP in Michigan, blocking and sabotaging. It was their AG who did this.

McConnell Backs Investigation Into Russian Hacking. McCain Calls It ‘Warfare.’ Trump Denies.

The Russian involvement might actually get the GOP to implode if we're lucky. The nation security buffs like Mc Cain are practically frothing with rage at this point.

Don't trust McConnell. He's half the reason we're in this mess in the first place, by squashing the story months ago. And coincidentally, his wife is being considered for a position in the Trump cabinet. How convenient.

The man's a complete weasel, and he's only doing this because he's buckling to pressure while trying to still maintain control of the situation. When someone is walking and talking, watch their feet.
