Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Meh. China can't do anything to us or the West is the thing. They can barely exist outside their own borders and are a good 40 years behind the other great powers in terms of technology and capabilities. We'll be fine.
Taiwan won't be though.

Oh really when?In other news, Boeing conducts a deal with Iran Air
giving a totally not veiled f—k you to the Pres-Elect.
“Today’s agreement will support tens of thousands of U.S. jobs” associated with the production and delivery of the planes, Boeing said in its news release.
The intended recipient of Boeing’s message clearly seemed to be President-elect Donald J. Trump.
Its carefully worded statement is emblematic of the tightrope that America’s biggest exporters are walking amid his threats to shake up trade policy and undo the Obama administration’s nuclear accord with Iran. That agreement lifted the American sanctions on Iran, making Boeing’s jet deal possible.
Mr. Trump has talked about imposing tariffs on imports from China and on American companies that move jobs to Mexico and other countries. But he has not said much about how some of America’s major manufacturing companies, like Boeing and General Electric, and their workers could be hurt if other countries retaliated for the tariffs or if existing trade agreements were ripped up. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage
Boeing officials, already dismayed by Mr. Trump’s attack last week over the costs of a new Air Force One, acknowledged that the Iran jet deal still faced contingencies — a polite way of saying they were deeply worried about whether Mr. Trump and the Republican-led Congress would support it.
Beyond that deal, Boeing and other companies that export jet engines, high-tech products or heavy equipment — and supply some of the highest-paying manufacturing jobs — are also concerned that they could become easy targets if Mr. Trump started a trade war.
“You slap a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports, and the Chinese suddenly acquire a fondness for Airbus jets instead of Boeing’s,” Richard L. Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst, said, referring to Boeing’s European rival.
I believe it was the former.
In other words, Democrats and minorities would feel the brunt the most. The people who voted against Trump.
The Mid West and Bible Belt would okay for the most part.

Considering the antagonism building between China and Russia's conciliatory gestures towards the United States, I have to wonder if Putin is planning a power play in central Asia. That's the only geopolitical context in which Russia would actually have any geopolitical interest in improving relations with the United States. Experts predicted a breakdown of Sino-Russian relations over hegemony in central Asia would be inevitable, but that assumption got pushed back a few decades after the crisis in Crimea.

On some level the Red States should welcome the sudden depopulation of blue states, it would be like the Second Black Plague...horrific, brutal and corpses as far as they eye can see but hey, a lot of dead liberals means a lot of property is there to be distributed among the survivors.
But a nuclear attack would ruin that...the land and the buildings and areas get contaminated, and the property loses value.
And all because one stupid little man couldn't know when to keep his fucking mouth shut. The only thing that comes close to giving me peace of mind is that we managed to survive decades of the last one before it eventually came to an end. Assuming we can't somehow stop this before it starts, then at least we'll probably survive this one too. Doesn't stop me from tensing up a bit just thinking about it though.

As of January 21st, 2017, an irrational actor is going to have at least nominal control over the American nuclear triad.
Dear probably non-existent God, I really hope Garcon is right about the JCS being prepared to revolt and hold a palace coup if its needed.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. So I stumbled across this rather amusing rant about "identity politics".
tl:dr; the Democrats really shouldn't be giving up identity politics. They should be fucking doubling down. Also, the GOP are massive whiny hypocrites, but that's hardly news.
Disgusted, but not surprised

Trump said. "You have North Korea. You have nuclear weapons and China could solve that problem and they're not helping us at all."
Donald, shut up. Please for the love god shut up.
We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.
