Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I imagine that Putin would hold off on that for a while since he's able to get allies so high up in the cabinet through the jackass that just got elected. The opportunity of him managing to win the Cold War decades after it supposedly ended so easily has to have Putin drooling.

"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all" Futurama, GodfellasThe thing with trying to nuke Iran is that Iran might nuke back, you can't launch a nuclear strike quietly and without prep work, so the Iranians might well restart their nuclear program if it looks like Trump is going to invade, if he then decides to opt for a nuke the Iranians might fire off whatever they've got in retaliation.
Now such missiles might not be able to reach the US, but US allies in the region wouldn't be so lucky.

Like when he got Time's Person of the Year, he whined about how it used to be "man of the year" and criticized time for Political Correctness...
Speaking about the Time's person of the year cover, this is a nice article on it

Barack's brother is a politician in his home country, and was apparently expecting his brother being US president to shower him with power. Instead, Barack appears to have not used his position to do a single thing to help him, in accordance with the expected personal/professional detachment of a US president.

Basically, Obama displayed some actual integrity, and his brother apparently didn't like that and decided to join with the orange monster.
Holy crap, the Big Good's brother got resentful of his honor and purity and defected to join the Big Bad. Now the bad guys have won and are in the process of dismantling everything good in the kingdom, while the Bigger Bad steeples his hands and laughs at the conflict. We are officially living in a crappy fantasy story.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Trump is reportedly consulting people on the legality of giving his kids roles in his administration.
Totally not a thing tin-pot dictators do.
Considering the alternative is Trump deciding for himself what course of action to take based on which adviser (or which Russian autocrat) he spoke to last, it's probably better if they are involved in the administration. Kushner and Ivanka are some of the only people who can get him to actually change his mind, and if he wants to start a war over a snide tweet, that's the difference between life and death for the human species.

And I think it's very likely they'll be allowed to get away with that, because Ivanka and Kushner are probably the only people in the world who would be able to talk Trump out of doing something absolutely insane if it came down to that.
A Trump administration with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner included moves us towards the Cyberpunk genre becoming Truth in Television. Without them it moves us towards Doctor Strangelove becoming Truth in Television.

It's certainly true that Trump becoming President has definitely discredited the democratic process. Of course it's not fair since Trump won by EC and not the Pop. Vote but that itself shatters the illusion of America as being the bastion of Democracy, it is in fact behind in several respects to systems in Europe and other parts of the world, which uses the popular vote. And the idea that Hillary can win the vote by more than 2.5 million votes and come in second place is more or less a Shocking Defeat Legacy for America's institutions. It has FAILED to represent its people.
America never succeeded (or rather never attempted to succeed) in spreading democracy directly but it did inspire people by example, with its freedom of speech and expression, its diversity and Melting Pot, and of course Obama becoming President was emblematic of the meritocratic ideal, the visible symbol that a man regardless of the colour of his skin, can rise to the highest office entirely by merit and hard work.
That American Romance is gone. Now America resembles so many other nations...oligarchies like Russia, right-wing ethno-nationalism like India's current government, plutocracies in other places. As Trevor Noah said, it Trump is like an African dictator, Idi-Amin Dada, Gaddafi, Mugabe. So, China and Russia's illiberal regimes will feel safer because reformers there no longer can look at America as a model. America is unexceptional.
