The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That won't necessarily work as well as they hope though. His hardcore base will buy it, but people in general always blame the incumbent for their problems.

[up] Hopefully Trump won't just try to distract people by starting a war with Iran or something.

I doubt a war would make him look any better. The public doesn't seem to have the stomach for one.

[up][up] Considering most Americans now and days are anti-war, I'm not sure a War with Iran would actually help Trump with anyone except Pro-War Republicans.

A war with Iran would be such an epic disaster. The casualties alone of just getting to Tehran would be 10k, if we're lucky.

It doesn't help that Trump has flip-flopped before on the Iran Deal. His Secretary of Defense pick, "Mad dog" Mattis, is also not reassuring. The guy Trump picked to be our Secretary of Defense is a guy who wants to bomb the crap out of Iran.

An Iranian War would sink Trump's approval ratings significantly. Americans don't really want to fight wars anymore.

[up] I'm hoping they don't remember that, so that we have less of a chance of Trump getting a second term.

All they have to do is wait for a convenient excuse and they can roll out the fake patriotism to silence dissent. He's taken every other step from Fascism for Dummies, why not that one?

[up] We thought that Dubya wouldn't get a second term, but we were wrong there. Trump voters are even less connected to reality.

At the latest thank you tour in Iowa, Trump said he wanted to increase the minimum wage. Okay, then don't fucking hire Andrew Puzder as your secretary of labor! Jeez...

@Trash Jack

Much as I don't Trump to win a second term in office, I think wishing he would start a horrible war in the hopes that his popularity tanks is...questionable. Since that would result in so many people dying. And as Geostomp mentioned, there's no guarantee it would cost him re-election.

I feel like Trump is on much shakier ground than Bush. When Bush became President the economy wasn't reeling from a financial crisis and 9/11 provided a convenient rallying point for Republicans to paint the anti-war people as unpatriotic.

War is work. I don't think Trump wants to get involved in that. It's not like Dubya where they were plotting the downfall of Saddam even during the transition period and 9/11 just provided them a good excuse to get the country in a fighting mood.

I could definitely see him going for a slam-dunk war or two, something where we can bomb the shit out of the enemy with impunity and move in for some accolades and praise.

Would honestly make me worried if i were Cuba, as that fits the criteria pretty well. Does Cuba have those fancy new anti-air missiles that Russia's deployed in Syria?

I could also see Trump being stupid enough to think invading Iran or something would be an easy thing only for it to quickly run away from him.

I'm praying that Trump doesn't get his hands on a copy of Battlefield 3, hell or any modern setting Battlefield game that features conflicts with Russia, Iran, or China.

Fuck me, Reality Is Unrealistic now to the point where even Modern Warfare 2 and its social Darwinist US military general who engineers wars to make the American people patriotic again can be taken seriously.

The Klan was planning a victory march in North Carolina, there have been a number of hate crimes and harassment of minorities reported since Trump got elected, Trump's spokesperson said there was a precedent for singling out muslims because of the japanese internment camps...it goes on.

[up][up][up] The fact that Trump supporters aren't raising more objections to this sends the message that either a) they are bigots too and thinks this is awesome and a sign that they are free to act on their bigotry too or b) bigotry is not an automatic dealbreaker for them even if they don't really agree with it.

I'm actually more disgusted with the latter group.

Mhm. The Neo-nazis and KKK, while revolting, are few in number. The people who voted for Trump despite the former's very vocal and public support are not.
