Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Given what we've seen these past eight years, it's long past time to pretend that the old gentlemen's agreements apply anymore. If the Republicans insist on a coup to install a manchild so they can gut the country, then all bets should be off.
So naturally, the Democrats won't do that so they can pretend to be virtuous while the Republicans continue their treason, blaming them, and getting off scot free.

The GOP is eliminating the filibuster no matter what the Democrats do-they stated they will nuke it if the Democrats "misuse" it, which is code for "the first time they use it". Assuming they do not trash it during the first session of Congress, it will not survive to see the second. Every single proposal put forward so far by the Republicans is so horrid that the Democrats have to stand against it, and the GOP has made it clear they are not concerned with riders and poison pills as long as their legislation gets through.

Newt's the kind of guy who loudly talks about how great Hitler was for Germany's economy while visiting a Holocaust museum.
EDIT: Damn pagetopper.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.""He wrote some alternate-history novels, one of which was how the South won the Battle of Gettysburg. So that should tell you something about the guy right there..."
And which resulted in US Grant taking command of the Union armies faster and the Civil War ending sooner in a Union victory in the second and third part of that series. We can hate on Newt all we want, but lets keep the facts straight.
I liked those books.
Gingrich's tweet is actually a "Remain vigilant against terrorist attacks!" thing.
Full version:
His combined last three tweets, and yes he misspelled "training."

@Captain Capsase, last page: What do you mean "almost nothing"? With all the news coming out, it looks more and more like there's absolutely nothing that can be done now to stop the GOP. Even when they make everything demonstrably worse for everyone but the richest of the rich (and they will), their propaganda engine is so strong that a significant portion of the populace will never learn and will always blame everyone else for turning the world into a living hell, and anyone smart enough to see through their lies will never be believed and completely marginalized through gerrymandering and voter suppression, and possibly also imprisoned under false pretenses (can you say "terrorist sympathizer"?) or covertly disappeared if it came down to it.

The GOP would never act on it if it meant giving up their stranglehold on the federal government, and the Democrats wouldn't be able to act on it. The GOP's voters would never learn this information because Fox News and Breitbart will tell them over and over that it's nothing but a pack of lies, and they'll believe every word of it, especially as they continue to hear it. And the Democratic voters will continue to be marginalized to the point where they will be statistically irrelevant in total spite of the changing demographics.
Between climate change (the denial of which is essentially now official U.S. policy), nuclear war (for the first time in history, we have a president-elect who has expressed a desire to use nuclear weapons, and who has been poking China with a frickin' stick for the last week), and all the other crap, no regime before has been poised to do as much damage to the world as the GOP is now.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@Captain Capsase: I expect this one to go out, not by the will of the people, but either by a horrific, climate-change-caused natural disaster or a full-fledged nuclear war. Neither of which bode well for life on Earth.
The GOP's Fourth Reich can't last forever, but I'm willing to bet that it'll take humanity down with it.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryIt takes more than one country to wage a war; others have to be willing to participate. Plus as much of as an asshole as he is, Trump is also proving to be very fucking fickle. He likes having the big stick to threaten people with, but does not appear to have the sort of patience it would take to do something like use a nuclear weapon. Climate change, while a disaster, is probably not going to destroy the human species, and I'm more worried about that than I am a nuclear exchange happening.
In any case it seems like everyone else in the Paris Accords is prepared to try and jostle the US into abiding by it, which should be interesting to watch.
While taking my dad home from a doctor's appointment with my younger brother, we had a chat in the car that quickly turned to politics.
I pointed out how Republicans fought against Obama's $700 billion infrastructure proposal, but are suddenly okay with Trump's $1 trillion infrastructure proposal. My point was to show how they claim to be against government involvement and all for fiscal conservatism, but suddenly aren't when it's a Republican proposing these things. Instead, he missed the point and said that Democrats fought against ideas proposed by Republicans that are normally Democrat ideas; each side doesn't want the other to get a chance to take credit for ideas that are broadly popular. A good point, except that's not what I was talking about.
He acknowledges that no libertarian president (he's a libertarian... and a manosphere member) will ever be elected, so he figured the practical thing to do was vote Trump and hope he gets at least some libertarian things done. He said the media will make Trump look like an idiot, but ignore that and look what he actually does, since he's a smart guy. My dad said that the Carrier jobs thing was basically giving taxpayer money to a company to keep US employees, and I forget my brother's justification for that.
I said at one point that the right is divided into multiple groups, pointing out how Glenn Beck (who he likes or liked in the past) hates Trump, and how reason.com (a libertarian site he frequents) wrote an editorial condemning the alt-right. He missed the point about me saying how his heroes oppose his other heroes, and instead said "I think it's funny how divided the whole country is" and acknowledged that the right is many groups. I should have pointed out that they have rather opposing agendas.
Republicans are now more anti-free market than Democrats.
The hell is going on and they call us the socialists o.O

When exactly did Democrats oppose or obstruct Republicans? Was it when the Republicans proposed to invade Iraq, and the Dems decided that Bush would not obviously lie to the public and his colleagues and say he had no intelligence. Was it when the Dems decided despite having a good case not to Impeach Bush because...I don't know.
Was it when Obama and the Republicans agreed to sell TPP together?
I honestly have no patience for the both sides arguments. The Democrats are clearly a normal, rational party, who behaves constitutionally, observes basic decorum and listens to science and is committed to the full letter of the First Amendment (i.e. separation of Church and State). Yes they aren't perfect but the borderline mentality of "If no one's perfect, the worst is the same as the mediocre and the good" is not fit basis for adult perception and judgment. In our day to day life we befriend imperfect people, fall in love, marry and start families with imperfect people and give birth to imperfect disappointing children. Why do we expect political parties to be perfect?
About the only time the Democrats obstructed Republicans was when Ted Kennedy opposed Bork as SCOTUS, but then Bork genuinely was a terrible choice.

It's over. We've lost.
Forgive me if I refuse to believe such a self-defeating idea. The situation may be bleak, but we can't afford to just say "It's hopeless." We have to keep going, keep fighting, and keep trying to solve the problems of our world.
And yes, I said "we." Me, you, and everyone on TV Tropes who feels upset about this election, we all need to be involved in the political process. Is your local Congressman in favor of a terrible policy? Contact them and tell them how you feel. Is your Congressman facing pressure to bend to Trump's whims? Contact them and give them your support. Is a seat up for election? Vote for a Democrat, and do what I just said afterwards. Are Trump and/or the GOP doing something stupid? Make sure everyone knows about it. We must never give up hope. Not now, not ever.

Yes, but if the GOP takes away the fillibuster, there's almost nothing than we can do to stop them.
