The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

According to Fox News Radio (kill me; my libertarian dad plays it sometimes), the last president that confronted the Supreme Court like Obama did was Franklin Roosevelt, and according to them, it affected the following election.

By which you mean "won by a landslide"? There was somewhat of a drop-off in his third-term election but that was going from winning damn near every state to winning most states, and this was despite breaking tradition by getting elected to a third term. I mean this is a president who regularly gets third place after Washington and Lincoln on lists of greatest U.S. Presidents. An amendment exists because of his popularity with voters.

I don't think comparing Obama to FDR is something the Republicans want to do.

"It doesn't matter because they just make stuff up anyway," Gingrich said.

Well, that's the Republican thought process on elections in a nutshell-truth doesn't matter because whether you're lying your teeth or not, whether you're being the most unelectable asshole or not, your opponent is going to treat you as though you are, and therefore you're unelectable. Though really, that's something that's more true from the Republican side of the aisle than the Dems (not that the dems don't have a few examples of outright B Sery)

Will Santorum drop out if he manages to lose Pennsylvania?

It goes I think with the mindset that I notice republicans here in missouri have. If the facts say you're wrong, the facts are lying.

[up][up]Eh, I'd like to see him stay in a bit longer so he keeps hurting/distracting Romney. His misogynistic/jingoistic/homophobic/racist/etc drivel is (sadly) going to be spread anyway, by himself or someone else, regardless of when he drops out. Even if Romney doesn't hit 1144 Santorum still won't win the convention.

One now wonders whether Santorum's failure will discredit fundamentalism for the right or if Romney's (probable if not inevitable) failure in the later election will discredit moderation (even more so) for the right. Or maybe, somehow, both.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

I fear that all this election will do is send the Right further Right.

The real question is, which'll happen first-they'll have gone so far right that they lose all credibility and get replaced by something with more credibility? Or they'll go so far right, but still win because sometimes shit happens, and the country'll go to hell as a result?

Another think tank bites the dust.

Newt's Health Care think tank has filed for bankruptcy.

[up] I almost feel bad for Gingrich...

Here's what I think will probably happen regarding the SCOTUS Healthcare case. The individual mandate will be struck down by the usual 5-4 vote. However, the court will rule the mandate is severable and uphold the rest of the law.

As harmful as killing the mandate would be, it doesn't change the fact that many parts of the law are clearly able to stay in place without it (insurance agencies cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, people can stay on parents' health care until 26, etc).

the requiring coverage for the people with preconditions is actually predicated upon the mandate, as the mandate was meant to lower premiums and keep people on insurance. Otherwise, people are going to only get insurance when they get sick.

I doubt it. Scalia and Thomas want to strike down the entire law, so they'll go to efforts to strike it down.

Well, that does offer one way out of this mess. The arch-con judges go for striking the whole thing down, Kennedy wants to sever the mandate, and the liberal judges want to keep it. That impasse might end in the law's favor.

I'm not really optimistic at this point. When was the last time we had a 5-4 decision and Kennedy sided with the more liberal judges?

Isn't he supposed to be the swing vote? I haven't kept track, but he seems only mildly centrist.

Again-when's the last time he was the swing vote for how the liberals see things? I'm not saying it never happens-I'm asking when it happens.

So, in other election news, Kathy Nikolaus, the woman responsible for the Waukesha county election stuff, and more specifically responsible for a great many fuckups over the decades (posting results very late, always miraculously in favor of the conservative candidate when one is involved), and even more specifically responsible for the Prosser election which swung the election by 7,000 votes, has stepped aside for the upcoming recall elections in order to restore voter confidence.

She's known for having the election results on her personal computer, not on the network for the rest of the state.

She came into the news more recently when she failed to post the waukesha county republican primary results until the day after the primary.

I don't know, but right now the deputy chief, the person below Nikolaus, is in charge.
