The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think they'd hate to impeach him but I think he's crazy enough that he might manage to find something so out of line that even the Epublicans can't stand for it. I'm talking getting caught on camera sexually asulting a teenage in the White House, ordering the bombing of civilians then boosting about it on Twitter, actually strait up shooting someone on fifth avenue in public for everyone to see, attempting to nuke a country because a world leader insulting him online, trying to sell Alaska back to Russia and pocket the money kinds of crazy.

Trump is mostly trying to make the Presidency into a kleoptocratic racket. This is obvious enough. So you will see massive corruption and robbing of public's funds. Some of that has already happened on his campaign, and some of it is underway at present.

All of Trump's Legion of Doom are kleptocrats: Devos, Kushner, Bannon. So it's going to be a return to the Robber Baron days of the Gilded Age, similar to how The '90s for The New Russia was a new Time of Troubles at the hands of Semibankirschina.

Once that happens, and after the Republicans get what they want from Trump, they'll move against him. Because they'll have to because things will get so bad people will stop paying taxes...why pay taxes to a government that is robbing you.

@Julian: The thing is, Trump has been screwing little America over for decades and bragging about it for just as long. People won't believe that he's being serious about nuking another country until he actually does it, for instance - they didn't believe him literally on anything else he's said.

If Trump sexually assaults a woman on camera, the Republicans may rattle their sabers and harrumph, but look at all the good it did when the pussy-grabbing tape came out. It will pass for Trump as one of a hundred scandals that month, and the 'look at what she was wearing' will start with the 11PM news that day. The alt-right will obliterate her and her entire family online.

The thing is, Trump isn't a moron, he's an unscrupulous snake who is always, always only looking out for number one. Hell, even if he's impeached he'll probably have another two books out about it by the time all his stuff is carted out of the White House.

It's been fun.

Trump is a moron...when it comes to most things. Sadly, the one thing he is good at doing — conning people into thinking he's hot shit — just so happens to be something that really helps win elections.

My concern is that our country will end up being the next Trump Steak, Trump Vodka, Trump Mortgages, etc.

"Trump America" may very well dethrone New Coke for being the defining example of failure.

With our luck after eight years of incompetence and corruption, Trump will be succeeded by a CIA spook who goes on to put an end to the remaining pretenses of democracy in America.

[up] Fuck it, if that happens, I'm gonna go all in for "Calexit".

Still, I'd like to think that would be a bridge too far for too many Americans for it to happen.

[up] You think they'd be allowed to leave peacefully in that situation? The ringleaders would get locked up or "go missing" well before it got off the ground.

The big danger with a Trump administration isn't just that Trump will be corrupt, it's that his branch won't effectively enforce laws against corruption to avoid scrutiny on himself and his inner circle, and then it's open season with every politician looting as much as they can from their constituency. Corruption has a nasty habit of spreading rapidly.

[up][up] Wouldn't that just lead to them becoming martyrs for the movement?

I'm also worried about Trump setting a bad example for others. He's already doing that by seemingly validating and encouraging bigotry.

[up] TBH, I think Calexit is a terrible, terrible idea. I am deeply worried that it will end up being the genuinely better option in the next few years.

[up][up] I mean, taking control of the situation after a decade or so of horrendously corrupt and incompetent government is how Putin rose to power, so it's not entirely unthinkable.

So, in some not Trump related news (for now) the Army Core of Engineers have halted the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and will likely be looking to reroute it.

It's a pretty big victory for the Standing Rock Sioux and their allies, it will be interesting to see how things will proceed from here, or even if the pipeline ultimately gets completed at all.

Wow! Well done, protesters! That's one of the biggest and most successful (thus far) examples of mass protest I've seen in the US for a long time. And they went through a lot, too, between water cannons, pepper spray, and some very serious permanent injuries. The violence used against peaceful protesters was utterly unjustifiable, and the way the media was reporting it (calling government attacks on them "clashes", as if there were two sides fighting) was disgraceful. I'm glad they've had a victory, though it can't be taken for granted yet.

I doubt the pipeline's a big enough deal that Trump trying to force it would be "too far". Otherwise I couldn't say.

[up][up][up] If Trump tries to do that to Veterans, then he'll look like scum to a lot of the Regular Joe's that voted him in, and that would definitely hurt him in 4 years. I think he'll try to ram it the minute a viable route is found, but not at the cost of attacking Veterans.

@Julian last page: I think it's a dangerous mistake to dismiss Bannon a mere kleptocrat. He actually believes in tearing down both the Republican and Democratic party establishments and in at least some of the poison he's responsible for peddling through Breitbart. And more importantly, he appears to know how to manage Trump and is more competent than him.
