Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Friendship Is Magic advocates embracing diversity and social equality, giving wrongdoers a chance, and generally being kind, loving, and compassionate. It also encourages accepting yourself and methodically chasing your ambitions with hard work and patience.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. There is a not-insignificant chance that someone with a pony/anime avatar on twitter is a massive dick. Whenever people compile hate tweets at least half will be twilight sparkle calling someone a sjwfaggot and telling them to die.
I've seen some interesting reasons why bronies tend to be hateful shits. Someone here (IIRC) noted that the show is all about accepting people for who they are and then the hateful shits apply that only to themselves.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Plus there's the rush that these inbreds have somehow trained themselves to get from "subverting" something innocent. Who else would try encoding a rape joke inside the design of their mascot?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotRE: a few pages back; I'll agree that Trump and his ilk are the True Enemy, but why should those who support him be given the benefit of the doubt? At what point does their willful, intentional blindness to how /reality/ functions not make them the enemy as well? Why should we coddle their delusions? They were given every opportunity, shown over and over and over again in a 24-hour news cycle on and off line how horrifically unfit trump is. how vile, hateful, and petty he is, and they are not the enemy as well? How does that follow?

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"
I do believe that sometimes the only way to get people to learn is for them to have to face consequences. Some people can't be reached through words or understanding, but only once their actions affect them personally. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and respecting their bad opinions won't help, you need to make sure you do not approve and won't give them any kindness. Violence is not the answer, but don't treat them like their your friend. Ostracize them.
And what if the GOP's propaganda machine continues to blame the now all-but-powerless Democrats for the Republicans' failure to govern? How do we deal with angry people who have been deliberately taught to direct their anger at the GOP's scapegoats?
And why should we give a flying fuck about that fact?
"Oh Gee, Sorry I Self Destructed The Country Even Though You Told Me Not To. I Know Better Now" Are they voting age adults or are they toddlers?

Unfortunately, You seem to subscribe to Rational Actor
as a basis for how people choose and act.
We don't. Heck, even Law's related (yet, far older) "reasonable person
" isn't without flaw. It's a lot more rooted in people than Rational Actor is, however.
Reasonable person at least factors in that people can be, and often are, hoodwinked by other people using their emotions.
Emotional decision-making is what people do. Just ask advertisers. And, we also need to look to advertisers to see how things got this way... And, how to get out of it.
Because, loathe him all you like, Trump did see a sales opportunity and jumped at it, even though he didn't create the whole structure he used.

I think when speaking about what motivates or factors in the decision-making of citizens when voting is not so simple as some here are implying. A fairly dense body of work done by sociologists, political scientists and political communication experts in the field of media effects and communication has shown that there are numerous factors that are involved in how citizens process information.
An example of a relatively "simple" and straightforward model is the following: https://postimg.org/image/8dsu83um9/

"It is true that we are called a democracy, for the administration is in the hands of the many and not of the few."![]()
Regardless of how rational they are or not, they have proven to be an important demographic that swung the election for Trump (under rather dubious circumstances, but still).
Moving forward it will be necessary to either try to woo some of these people back to the democrats side (may not actually be as practical as some suggest), or their worldview will have to be fought against tooth and nail to bring our base out in stronger numbers and to keep them from being suppressed. Either way they can not be ignored.
All I can say is, if someone does have the guts to start selling "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for HRC" merchandise in the next few years, I'm definitely gonna be giving them my likely-to-be worthless dollars.
This of course assumes the Trump administration ends up being a total clusterfuck (It totally will).

Disgusted, but not surprisedOn the issue on nerd culture a few pages back, honestly it wouldn't have been hard for conservatives to hijack. If anything, they were already there. We're just seeing the end result.
For starters superheroes and many video games are inherently fascist. Oh this one person has special powers but somehow have enough self control to not be tempted to do bad. All while the cops and government bureaucracy continue to be a bother, be useless, or just flat out not exist. Just let this one guy/group do it since they know the crisis they face.
And then there's the issue of "you're the chosen one" or "you're special." The loser kid who had to do nothing but exist and then his life will determine the fate of the world. "Oh and don't worry, those meatheads who picked on you when you were child won't have the last laugh when they're subservient to you"
Then there's the treatment of woman. Either as damsels in distress or they wear impossibly skimpy clothing. Either way, the woman's existence is there to totally cater to the male viewer. When they complete their objective, they get the woman's affection. So when these guys don't get their skimpy wearing girlfriend, they cry that the women's suffrage shouldn't have been a thing.
And since most nerd stuff have been created pre 90s, diversity is an issue. It also doesn't help that the eventually "special snowflake" nerd characters are white 90% of the time in high school movies that usually have an all white cast in the first place. "Colored Nerds? Oxymoron el oh el" And of course, bitching about race lifting a white character while defending whitewashing a fictional nonwhite character.
Yeah, the fascism tendencies and sexual entitlement? Screams easy pickings for neoconservative dogma.
Re: the laws around Cabinet potisions. It's pretty much entirely up to the Executive branch except for senate confirmation (the Constitution gives the senate the power of "advice and consent" on all public appointments which I take to mean those with authority to order people around in the President's name. Cabinet departments can be created and dissolved at will (Bush II created Homeland Security needing only his say-so) and while it would be stupid to leave a department head unfilled there's no law requiring it.
Much as i may want to send all Trumpkins to a Room With a Moose, there's nothing to be gained from fighting hate with hate.
I figure you give poor whites programs that help them even if they'll spit in your face and call it Communism just like you give your poor grandmother with dementia good food even if she'll throw it in your face and call it poison, because the alternative is inhumane. But you don't listen to them or act like their viewpoint has any actual merit.

Uh you just described nearly every single piece of artistic creation as far as I remember. Protagonists have been always special and entitled people as far as story telling goes.
That description isn't that different from a shallow description of the Epics of Homer like Iliad and the Odyssey, or the Biblical tales of the Old Testament specially the Book of Judges or the tales of the Holy Grail.
What really brings those people to fantasy in general is the power fantasies those groups get, where being the right kind of white automatically grants you a special place in the world and being special just for existing.
This is the same understanding I have over why those noxious types are so attracted to shows like MLP and Steven's World, because it doesn't matter how much of a judgmental, racist, homophobic and sexist assholes they are, it doesn't matter how much of an underachiever and plain person they are and it doesn't matter how little they contribute to society as a whole and how much they hate other people for not being like them. These are universes where they would be loved, cherished and accepted even though they are deplorable human beings.

Inter arma enim silent leges@M84: The Democratic Party is already selling "I Didn't Vote For Trump" merch on their website
.
"They were given every opportunity, shown over and over and over again in a 24-hour news cycle on and off line how horrifically unfit trump is. how vile, hateful, and petty he is, and they are not the enemy as well? How does that follow?"
Because people distrust "Mainstrain" media, because Trump is also a showman who now how to charm people and for last, Trumph ve this "New guy here" aura that allow to claim innocent
""Economic Anxiety!""
Oh they have economic anxiety, that is true....problem is they chose their "solution" in based of identity politics and petty populism
"what if the GOP's propaganda machine continues to blame the now all-but-powerless Democrats for the Republicans' failure to govern? "
If my experience here told me something is that it wont work, the republican were already shrinking before Trump come here, once is polices dont work and he make an ass of himself(which he will, given time) is popularity will decline.
" All while the cops and government bureaucracy continue to be a bother, be useless, or just flat out not exist. Just let this one guy/group do it since they know the crisis they face."
Funny because the policies brutality cases show a complete diferent mindset: policies are god send superhero who task is to mantain the LAW(said this in apropie way please) and they should be obey at all times, otherwise they can shoot you if they please

The analogy is more like:
"Here's your food grandma"
"YOU TRYING TO POISON ME?" *spits food your face*
"Here's your food grandma"
"YOU TRYING TO POISON ME?" *spits food your face*
Black sheep of the family who has an actual history of poisoning people: "Here's your food grandma"
"YAY! I LOVE YOU THE BEST!"
You: Damnit, grandma.
And then your mother slaps you and proceeds to tell you that your poison loving cousin paid attention to your grandma while you were too busy taking care of your great aunt, who your granny wants to deport.

I'm not going to buy anything with Trump's name (or face!) on it. It's like giving the Pumpkinhead even more free publicity.
Same with the "Stop the GOP" button. From a distance, all you can make out is the name, and that could give people the wrong impression.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.A lot of nerd culture attracts these disenfranchised and awkward young men because they're disenfranchised and awkward. It just so happens that disenfranchised and awkward young men are the easiest to convince that the problems with society, and the reasons they aren't being given what all that nerd culture (and regular culture) tells them young men deserve, is that there are people conspiring and lying to take away what's really theirs.
It's been fun.

...What does that have to do with ponies?
Oh God! Natural light!
