The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of all the people who didn't vote for Clinton, the Green Party voters are the ones who had the smallest impact.

I mean, if we're tossing blame around, I'm sure one could find a way to blame just about anyone, and indeed mostly you'd be right- even the people who vote Dem are probably guilty of alienating somebody, or just failing to reach out and try to change people's minds.

The greens were always going to get some votes. The fact that they got enough vote that they could've swung the election if those people voted Dem instead only serves to illustrate how goddamn close the election was.

OK, so I can officially add Green Party supporters to the shitlist next to Lost Causers? Anything else?

Haven't heard much about the recounts, other than that Stein managed to pay for the Wisconsin recount filing after the price hike, and she just filed for one in Michigan

Obama was a juggernaut of a candidate. It's not particularly useful to compare anyone to his margins.

Meanwhile, I feel like a lot of Libertarian newcomers were Republicans who couldn't stomach Trump, so instead of blaming them, we should be thanking them for making it this close.

In a first past the post system, you can vote for the fascist or you can vote for the candidate who might win over the fascist. Anything else is a wasted vote.

It's been fun.

There is only fascist here, Donald Trump...don't call Hillary a fascist or a fascist-enabler...

The Democrats are the only party who operate on principles and they keep getting screwed over for it. If the Green Party were really serious they could go to Red States and campaign and screw over local elections and get votes away from Republicans...the reason they don't do that is because the Republicans are "proper villains", they have no principles, and they are far more conniving about using dirty tricks to get people out of town. The Democrats didn't act that way with the Green Party to their sorrow.

Next time, tell the DNC to go medieval on their asses. Do them in as nonviolent a way as possible what Robespierre did to the Hebertists (aka Green Party of the French Revolution).

But it's amazing how Obama, with all his public approval, managed to get so little done.

Only because Congress, which was particularly recalcitrant this time, is just as much of a factor in the process of getting stuff done as the President. I feel like the public doesn't actually know that and thinks the president can literally do whatever he wants.

The Democrats, at least in theory are able to prevent Trump from getting about as much stuff done as the Republicans were Obama.

Whether they actually will is something else.

Not really. The Republicans had a majority in both congress and senate, meaning they could block pretty much anything as long as they were united. The Democrats have neither, meaning they can't block much of anything unless the Republicans aren't united.

[up][up]That assumes they still have a filibuster-the Republicans can eliminate it on their own and have threatened to do so. Considering they are already talking about calling a constitutional convention, I think the current trends support most of the Democratic party being locked out of the government until they are formally disenfranchised by a rewritten constitution. That is not jumping the gun-they have already threatened as much, and that is without the actual fascist policies suggested by Bannon.

[up][up][up] They only have 1-2 more Seats then the Democrats in the Senate. With Rand Paul at least saying he's going to keep an open eye on Trumps' policies at all times, it'd only take 1-2 more votes to keep Trump from doing anything too nasty.

Obama actually got a lot done.

The ACA alone, and Obama’s heroic insistence on getting it passed even as his own administration and Party advised him to throw in the towel, puts him ahead of any President since LBJ at his peak. Then there’s the stimulus, which as well as saving the country from Great Depression-levels of unemployment, basically enacted the Liberal Wish List that neither Clinton nor Jimmy Carter were actually on board with. From infrastructure to education to above all the genuine revolution it unleashed in green energy, the stimulus had a gigantic impact at every level of American society, and we’re still feeling the ripple effects to this day. And, and, it was all paid for, on time, with virtually no graft, which is just staggering given its size and speed of its implementation. (Thank Joe Biden for that, as he was in charge.)

Then there’s Dodd-Frank, the auto bailout, kicking the banks out of the student loan process, eliminating Bush’s restrictions on stem cell research, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Fair Sentencing Act, the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the Food Safety Modernization Act, the new START treaty, the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, two great SCOTUS Justices, vital tax breaks for the poor coupled with tax increases on the wealthy, just a flood of kickass regulations on issues ranging from power plants and fuel efficiency to tobacco and credit cards…But let me just point to three genuine historical landmarks from this past year, in three different corners of the globe: the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris climate treaty, and the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba. Taken together, that trio sums up the hope and change I had in mind.

Donald Trump joined the radical scientific group A.I.M. and became M.O.D.A.A.K., the Mental Organism Designed As America's King. At some point A.I.M. began to forcibly conscript people to assist them in building a wall along the border between Texas and Mexico, including an unnamed man from Waco; however, their operation was shut down by Captain America.

So this happened in Marvel and pre-dated Trump's candidacy.

Lmao.

@Dingo: Ah, but that assumes the Democrats are going to stay a united front, which isn't a given. Indeed, the Democratic senators from Red states- the ones who'll be up for re-election in 2018- will have to be very careful when it comes to obstructing Trump.

If we use Nate Silver's analysis of this, and assume everyone equally or less favourable to Trump than Raud Paul consistently stands against him, we have... 51 Senators standing against him. Exactly enough, with no room left for error.

Only Christie could go to Democratic America. tongue

House has approved the 21st Century Cures Act, a bill that would significantly boost medical research, but at the cost of weakening the authority of the FDA and allow ramrodding of drugs through the system with less oversight.

And being the perpetual gadflies they are, Warren and Sanders oppose the bill on the ramrodding/hand outs to the Pharmaceutical industry.
