The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I was illustrating by means of example as for what the true function of Sanders can be and why people having unrealistic expectations that he could be, and should be, president is based on a total misconception of how political change has happened in US history.

As for American Mandela, remember that Dick Cheney called him a terrorist and he and Reagan supported Apartheid. Mandela's true friend was the late Fidel Castro. After he was released and entered office, Mandela visited Cuba first and Fidel is still a hero in Africa.

And you know America has made leftist and radical movements who did interesting things. You have the Radical Republicans and the abolitionists, you have IWW, Wobbly, CPUSA, Dr. King, Malcolm X, the Black Panthers (the only time the Republicans were pro-Gun rights was when they were worried that these guys would start using them to defend themselves).

[up][up]Sanders apparently didn't buy into that LBJ quote:

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Well Sanders is Jewish and he had relatives who died in the Holocaust so I can't say he has no idea how that works.

It's just that he and other Leftist are blinded by how left-wing politics are in Europe, or how European people said it was. He's thinking of Denmark and Scandinavian social democracy.

He's a sincere, down-to-earth guy, personally lovable...but he and his supporters are making him something he's not. And look, Sanders is a far more heroic and moral person than most people who became presidents. Americans probably shouldn't glorify the President so much I think because it doesn't make us appreciate the many worthy senators and other officials who played unsung roles in history. Lincoln by Spielberg averted that by making Thaddeus Stevens the second American politician of the 19th Century people know by name...and Sanders should be the Thaddeus Stevens of the 21st Century.

Going to Cook Report itself shows Trump up in PA by 60K+ votes, but the numbers haven't been updated in several days.

Seeing the Popular Vote tracker on Cook's site has been a kind of fixation for me. I can't imagine how someone who outvotes her opponent with 2.5 million votes ends up in second place.

2.5 million, that's more than the populations of the following nations:Macedonia, Slovenia, Latvia, Cyprus.

It's pretty funny to me that apparently even Gingrich admits Trump likely can't get Mexico to build the wall.

[up][up][up] ... OK, I just have to ask: How good are the odds that Trump will crack under the stresses/unglamorousness/blandness of being POTUS and decide an abrupt resignation before he finished his term and all the uproar, criticisms, PR drop and heckling that will surely erupt as a result are worth getting back to his old life as a corporate mogul?

Trump is Teflon Don, he's the man who can do whatever the hell he wants because American society has rewarded his worst impulses so far, so what's the motivation and need for him to be a nice boy.

[up]x3 So what happens if he starts to fuck up enough and the masses start waking up thanks to his inevitably broken promises that they stop rewarding him?

JulianLapostat Since: Feb, 2014

Firstly the masses voted against him...if Daily Kos is right, even fewer voted for him in the rust belt that formerly believed and his victory was more or less a fluke like what I have said.

Secondly, the ones who voted him for don't care about economics so long as they have a white supremacist in charge.

You underestimate how potent mass media-based disinformation has become.

Failing that, mental gymnastics. There is no shortage of idiots who think "incel" Lost Causers did more than a fucking 20K majority.

[up][up]Let me rephrase that. What would it take for the masses to get riled up enough that they actually do something that makes Donald nervous enough to want to resign? And what would they have to do to get him to that point?
