Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Unfortunately, my reading of Bannon getting picked as "Chief Strategist"
reads differently than everyone else's. Namely, that he's basically occupying the same role for Trump as Karl Rove did for Bush, and we know how well that worked.
As for why Bannon getting even an advisory position is bad, have a compilation of Breitbart's worst headlines
. Seriously, they read like something you'd expect from the Weekly World News if it went straight politics.
Given how vaguely you've worded that question, impossible. Laws tend to be kind of specific.
@Jetyl: I can only make assumptions based on what you type. Also I have no idea how to do the make words into trope links thing, so know that this is meant sincerely and not as an insult.
@Capsase: Eeeugh, while it's good that he's in favor of it (personally I don't think he actually gives a shit about the issue, and I never have thought he's given a shit about any of these issues because he hasn't had to.) this sort of mixed signalling can only be a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned. And that's regardless of whether or not he and his cronies use it as a smokescreen.

From Donald Trump's win triggers a Democratic civil war
.
Anyway, that quote right there says a lot to me about what the Democrats really got wrong. Like I said before, we're in an echo chamber. And it's not helping anyone.
@Monkey: The difficulty is that unless you are extremely specific about the scope of this policy, it could provide enough precedent for parties more interested about power than social justice to gradually creep the definition of "protected classes" for their own agendas. Incidentally, that's why I feel hate speech laws need to be handled very carefully, and should be extremely specific when they exist at all.
Yeah I understand that but I also believe there should be safeguards in place where hate speech should be limited in how much it can be actually acted on, the fact that we have someone like Trump as president shows we need some sort of institutional safeguards that would actually prevent such people from gaining power.
Beary, in many cases these guys are rich enough that they don't anticipate having to use Medicare in their old age. They don't take it because they don't need it, and because they're wealthy enough to not need it they assume those who aren't don't deserve it. It's a new form of the Prosperity Gospel.
Well, I was looking at Lin-Manuel hosting a game of "Guess Who's On The Money". His clue for the 20$ bill was "Trump likes him, nobody else does" (to which the guesser said "Hitler is not on US money, so who could it be...?". two consoling thoughts:
- Thomas Jefferson closed US trade for 15 months
and the USA survived.
- Andrew Jackson did all the crazy shit he did and the USA survived.
The USA has survived being run by crazy motherfuckers.
Then again it didn't used to have nukes.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
