The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]There's no real way for countries to police it - in terms of border crossing, that is. What usually happens is that someone who knows the situation dobs that woman in to the authorities, who then investigate and prosecute as necessary.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Unfortunately, my reading of Bannon getting picked as "Chief Strategist" reads differently than everyone else's. Namely, that he's basically occupying the same role for Trump as Karl Rove did for Bush, and we know how well that worked.

As for why Bannon getting even an advisory position is bad, have a compilation of Breitbart's worst headlines. Seriously, they read like something you'd expect from the Weekly World News if it went straight politics.

Another one of my (admittedly out-there) schemes what's the feasibility or morality of trying to get an initiative for an anti authoritarian law/amendment in my state (Washington)?

Given how vaguely you've worded that question, impossible. Laws tend to be kind of specific.

@Jetyl: I can only make assumptions based on what you type. Also I have no idea how to do the make words into trope links thing, so know that this is meant sincerely and not as an insult.

@Capsase: Eeeugh, while it's good that he's in favor of it (personally I don't think he actually gives a shit about the issue, and I never have thought he's given a shit about any of these issues because he hasn't had to.) this sort of mixed signalling can only be a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned. And that's regardless of whether or not he and his cronies use it as a smokescreen.

Well I'd just have it so that any candidate openly campaigning on violating any groups rights would be denied ballot access (no prosecutions that's a dangerous slope obviously).

I'm not so sure that doesn't violate the first amendment, though it is tempting.

And you can't pass laws the preemptively negate federal laws or court rulings either.

Is it true that Paul Ryan wants to phase out Medicare? If so, is there any possible way he and the establishment can?

Do not obey in advance.

They can, but I don't know if they are willing to blow their political capital from this election on shit that will piss off the majority of the electorate.

If he does he'll do it so that the damn baby boomers are grandfathered in still at that point we would and should boycott paying for theirs.

Medicare is paid for through taxes though, You can't exactly get a lot of people to boycott taxes without a lot of unintended consequences.

Regardless I doubt the could get far, even uttering attempts against social security or Medicare are normally political suicide it did cost Bush 2006 midterms.

"The last Democrat to build a coalition out of minorities and working-class whites was Robert F. Kennedy, and it's because he went to coal country, to Indian reservations and the Mississippi Delta not to ask for votes, but to see how they lived," Michael Cooper wrote in U.S. News this week. "But on the campaign trail [this year] Democrats just stuck to college campuses and auditoriums far away from housing units, trailer parks and the small-towns where they lost.

From Donald Trump's win triggers a Democratic civil war.

Anyway, that quote right there says a lot to me about what the Democrats really got wrong. Like I said before, we're in an echo chamber. And it's not helping anyone.

It sucks that the government could get dismantled by these guys. The government isn't perfect, of course; it's not perfect by far, but some things like Medicare should stay. How fundamentalist are these madmen willing to get?

@Monkey: The difficulty is that unless you are extremely specific about the scope of this policy, it could provide enough precedent for parties more interested about power than social justice to gradually creep the definition of "protected classes" for their own agendas. Incidentally, that's why I feel hate speech laws need to be handled very carefully, and should be extremely specific when they exist at all.

It's pretty nice how things like health care are provided for them while most of us are one disaster away from total ruin.

If these politicians are so goddamned conservative, why do they accept these benefits? That sounds pretty liberal to me.

Yeah I understand that but I also believe there should be safeguards in place where hate speech should be limited in how much it can be actually acted on, the fact that we have someone like Trump as president shows we need some sort of institutional safeguards that would actually prevent such people from gaining power.

Beary, in many cases these guys are rich enough that they don't anticipate having to use Medicare in their old age. They don't take it because they don't need it, and because they're wealthy enough to not need it they assume those who aren't don't deserve it. It's a new form of the Prosperity Gospel.

Well, I was looking at Lin-Manuel hosting a game of "Guess Who's On The Money". His clue for the 20$ bill was "Trump likes him, nobody else does" (to which the guesser said "Hitler is not on US money, so who could it be...?". two consoling thoughts:

The USA has survived being run by crazy motherfuckers.

Then again it didn't used to have nukes.
