Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

]And the rest of the world will have to sit by while Trump's climate policy looks like the bio of a Captain Planet villain.
And if you think that Clinton was more likely to trigger WW3, you haven't been paying attention. A potential no-fly zone is nothing compared to a policy that extorts or deserts NATO allies, encourages arms races in Asia, wants to further destabilize the ME (potentially striking Iran or invading it, even though the work policy is working), all headed by someone with no impulse control.

You have four hopes on that front. 1 and 2 is that Bayer and Ginsberg stay alive and don't retire for 4 years. 3 is that Kennedy will probably swing liberal on that issue. 4 is that Roberts values the legitimacy of the Supreme Court more than his ideology and probably won't overturn a landmark precedent.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I think that's likely, yes.
In addition to what others have said, I want you to consider the fact that by Trump becoming president, an immense amount of bigotry and hatred has been validated and there already have been reports of harrassment and hate crimes from neo-nazis and other bigots. LGBT rights are going to take a massive beating. And while I think it's unlikely, Trump has been on record saying that he doesn't understand why we can't just "use nukes". This is a man with a hair-trigger temper and skin thinner than a latex glove with access to the nuclear codes, in theory.
This is not the optimal outcome and if you think it is you are missing a lot of information.

carbon-mantis: What the hell is this, "vote for Trump and commit suicide so it's the people we dislike that get stuck with the bill"?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot@carbon-mantis My sister went to WCU for graduate school a few years back. It frightens me to think to such a thing could happen to an area she lived in for a few years. You have my sympathies.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.smokey: There may still be some hope, so long as RBG and co stay on. As I said previously, Roberts did oppose the ruling but so far I have found him to be rational and consistent in his arguments, and it's my impression he's generally loathe to actively go back on a previous ruling.

The damned queen and the relentless knight. This was mostly work of /pol/ and the Putinbots meming that narrative into the social media but apparently enough people bit the bait and started parroting that they were seeing in social media.
Which ties with calling ther Killery over Benghazi allowing that narrative to mesh with a bullshit scandal.
Inter arma enim silent legesIt kills me to say this smokey but I figured right away when Trump got elected that LGBT people were gonna suffer some of the biggest losses.
Even in the best case scenario of Trump doing very little and letting Pence and his cabinet do all the work, Pence is still a raging bigot who believes in conversion therapy and will do everything in his power to make LGBT people's lives hell.
I don't know what to tell you except that I'm so sorry it's come to this and I hope you and all your friends and loved ones weather the storm.
At this point I really think the US should have gotten rid of the electoral college after Bush or at least made a rule that in case the electoral college and the majority vote conflict with each other the election should move to a second turn until both are on the same candidate.
Inter arma enim silent legesPence is a racist, misogynistic, queerphobic theocrat. He scares me more than Trump does. Trump is a symbol, but he's evil and incompetent. Pence is less visible, but he's evil and COMPETENT (ish. Moreso than Trump anyway).
"We're home, Chewie."@Red Rob, yeah, a big stretch of the national forest and gorge around here by WCU is cinders now. WCU itself isn't in range at the moment but small communities around the area are being warned to be ready for evacuation.
BuzzFeed has a preliminary list of Trump cabinet picks
Ben Carson as Secretary of Education?
Palin as Sec. of inferior?
John Bolton as Secretary of State???????
Fuuuuuuuuu
New Survey coming this weekend!Trump is EASILY the lesser evil between him and Pence as far as LGBT issues go. Trump straight up, from what I can tell, does not give a shit, at least not enough of a shit to actively go after gay marriage. Pence... would. Absolutely. Either way, they'll have to fight like hell to repeal gay marriage, and I suspect that it'll just be easier to make life way harder on the LGBT community than actually do things like repeal gay marriage or god forbid make homosexuality illegal, even if that's what they wanted to do.
Roe v. Wade is another major target that I suspect they'll just go halfway on. Probably defund Planned Parenthood, support abstinence-only education, and look the other way when birth and poverty rates in rural communities skyrocket. Again, too much effort for too little reward when the base will be satisfied by half-measures at this point.
I'd also like to see how anyone plans to somehow erase the alt-right community from the political process. They exist, folks. Get over it. We need to start finding ways to work around them.

Does anyone seriously believe Hillary's election would have caused WWIII?
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
